MÉZES, V. Miklós ‘Nicholas’ (CFP, Hungarian Military Knight Order) – Passed away peacefully at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Sunday March 17, 2019 at the age of 98. He was born in Zsira, Hungary and served in the Second World War. Upon his return from the eastern front, he entered local politics and became a member of the Hungarian Parliament from 1948-49, and was the oldest surviving member of the then Christian Democratic party. He immigrated to Canada in 1951 and settled in Niagara Falls, ON. He joined Investors Group in 1964, where he enjoyed a productive and fulfilling career for 40 years. He valued the great friendships he built over many years with his clients and associates at Investors Group. Nicholas was a member of the St. Catharines Business Club, where he forged lifelong business connections and shared meals and stories with his colleagues. As a dedicated supporter of Hungarian arts and culture in the community, he was extremely proud of his Magyar heritage. He was a devout Catholic who enjoyed singing with the St. Patrick’s Church choir. Nicholas went on to establish a Niagara Falls affiliate of Our Lady of Hungary Church based in Welland. Beloved husband of the late Klára (2006). They were married for 59 years. Cherished father of Miklós Mézes (Mary Ann Clarke, Guelph ON), Peter (Maria) Mézes, Carversville PA and Clare Mézes (Ábel Pándy, Toronto ON). Loving grandfather of Christina, Catherine, Sára, Éva, Nóra and Márton. Predeceased by his brother Rev. Fr. József Mézes and sister Brigitta Horváth (Hungary). Friends are invited to call at the PATTERSON FUNERAL HOME, 6062 Main St. Niagara Falls, with visitation on Friday March 29, 2019, 2 – 4 pm, and 7 – 9 pm (vigil prayers will be held at 7:30 pm at the funeral home). A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Hungary Church (337 Hellems Avenue, Welland). The Rite of Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Stanley Avenue, Niagara Falls. In memory of Mr. Mézes, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Niagara Health Foundation in honour of Dr. Eli Rabin and staff for their compassionate care of our father.
