Rodney George Henman
October 02, 1928 – March 04, 2019

Rodney George Dexter Henman
On March 4th, 2019, “Rod” at age 90, began his final and ultimate journey following a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on October 2nd, 1928, he left Scotland with his family in 1929 on the ship Melita, immigrating to Canada and eventually settling in Nova Scotia. Stewiacke, Amherst and Waverley were some of the many communities he called home until settling with his wife,Olive in Eastern Passage, building a home and raising a family there. Predeceased by his Irish mother, Mary Josephine (Harrington Cronin) and a British father, Eric James Henman, he was the youngest boy of their 8 children. Rod is survived by his older sister Doreen (Robert) Stump, now 97, Oliver, B.C. Gone ahead of him to prepare the way were siblings Oliver, Catherine “Kay” (Tony) Lipton, John William “Bill” (Julia), Eileen (Douglas) Carter, Charles (Marjorie), and Rosemary (Al) Chaisson. In addition to his immediate family, he was extremely connected and proud of all his many nieces and nephews.
Rod was a dedicated worker in the field of aviation. He started his career with Fairey Aviation where he met Olive. Later, he would move on to IMP Group Ltd where he was a founding member of the Aerospace Division, retiring in 1988 from his role as Vice President and General Manager of Aircraft R & O Division. He was lucky to have spent many leisure years beyond retirement with family, especially his beloved grandchildren, cherishing all their accomplishments. He enjoyed walking the boardwalk, gardening, berry picking, and buying lottery tickets. He was a competitive sportsman and loved the outdoors. He loved to play in the annual washer toss, toboggan down the Shearwater hill, watch the kids perform or throw a little ball with them. He was a proud Toronto Maple Leaf fan with a potential to become a supporter of the Carolina Hurricanes. A man of great faith, he was a loyal member of St Andrews Roman Catholic Church in Eastern Passage where he held many roles. He was one of the first Eucharistic Ministers to be commissioned in Halifax area. He served on many boards: Eastern Passage Credit Union, Halifax County-Bedford District School Board trustee, and Aviation Council of Nova Scotia to name a few.
Surviving him are his “darling” wife Olive (Myers) of 56 years, and children, Therese (Gary) Phillips, Louise (Francois) Poirier, Timothy (Sandra Hartley) and Anthony (Melanie) and beloved grandchildren: Samantha, Tegan, Alexah, Lauren, Josee, Jessica, Victoria, Luke, Brent, Riley and Lily. He prepared us well, quietly leading by example. His twinkle will be missed by each and every one of us.
Dad’s health was taken from him in November 2017 but he was fortunate to still share many positive times with his family. We appreciate all those people who supported us with information, compassion, care, friendship and more importantly ice cream for Dad in both the medical community and beyond. Too many to name, your touch was never lost to Dad. We are deeply grateful.
Visitation will be held at the Eastern Passage Community Funeral Home on Friday, March 8th 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Funeral mass will take place on Saturday, March 9th 1:30 pm in St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Passage. A reception will follow the Mass at the Eastern Passage Cow Bay Lions Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrews Church. Burial will take place in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Caldwell Road location.
Heaven, you got a good one!
