It is with heavy hearts the family announces the passing of our mother and grandmother Muriel J. Defazio-Smith, which occurred on Monday, March 25, 2019 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB on March 31, 1940 she was the daughter of the late Horace and Laura (Roy) Gill. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her first husband Daniel Defazio, second husband Donald “Smitty” Smith; brothers Gordon Gill and John Gill; sisters Constance Newman and Carol Sedlock; and her beloved cat Bella.
Muriel was a former member of the Pythian Sisters, involved with the Korean Veteran Association with her late husband Donald and was an avid volunteer for senior care. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Muriel is survived by her loving children Ronald Defazio, Cynthia Kierstead (Mark), Louie Defazio (Lori) and Pamela Defazio all of Saint John; cherished grandchildren Sharidan McLean (Ross), Jamus Kierstead, Max, Jessie and Daniel Defazio, great grandchildren Claire and Conan.
Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424) with visitation on Saturday, March 30 from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. her funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel, followed by a reception. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Donations in memory of Muriel may be made to Romero House Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
