James Benjamin “Ben” Prince
1926-2019
Ben passed away on February 28, 2019 at Digby
General Hospital. He was born in Kentville on May 2, 1926, eldest son
of Wilfred and Sally (Wickwire) Prince. He is survived by his second
wife, Connie Ganong (Kirkpatrick); his sons, Greg (Peggy Bonnell),
Toronto, Michael (Susan Grant-deceased), and John (Marlene Dykeman);
his grandchildren, Ben (Laura), Amy, Josh (Danielle), Jennifer and
Andrew (Jessica); his great-grandchildren, Adalyn and Jacob; his
sisters-in-law, Beau (Dr. Fred Prince) and Judy (John Prince), and
many nephews, nieces and cousins. He is also survived by his
brother-in-law, Howard (Marion) Kirkpatrick, Woodstock, NB, and
sister-in-law, Nancy Kirkpatrick, Saint John, NB, as well as
Kirkpatrick nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife,
Marjorie (Holdsworth) in 2001; by his brothers, Fred (Bridgewater, NS)
and John (Montreal, QC); and by his daughter-in-law, Susan Grant
Prince. Ben attended Acadia University, then opened a menswear store
and a dry-cleaning business in Digby, before joining the Maritime Life
Assurance Co. He was the Nova Scotia branch manager and retired as
Vice-President and Director of Agencies for Canada. Ben was a life
member of the Halifax Club, the Halifax Curling Club, the Digby
Curling Club, and the Digby Pines Golf Club. He was also a long-time
member of the Ashburn Golf Club. Following his retirement, he served
as a County Councillor for the Municipality of Digby County, and
served on the Board of Directors of the Digby General Hospital
Foundation. Ben was known for his outgoing personality, his love of
music, and his passion for golf and fishing. He believed he had lived
a wonderful life, and to the end he would share stories about his
adventures. His family had fond memories of family trips to the
Scraggy Lake camp and Ingonish Beach. The family wishes to recognize
the professional support and guidance provided by the Palliative Care
Team, the Tri-County VON, the Home Care Team, and the Digby General
Hospital. We want to thank the friends who supported Ben on his final
journey, in particular, Mary Lou Murphy, Ron Van Tassel, Phil and
Linda Barrett, Charles Haliburton, and Pastor Mark Cress. Many others
showed endless kindnesses to him, for which he was grateful. Ben wants
to acknowledge the excellent care provided to him and to Connie by
their angel-caregivers, Karen, Angela, Sheila, Teresa, Anne, Patty,
and Jane. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A
memorial service will be held on March 9, 2019 at 1:00 pm at
Smith’s Cove United Baptist Church. A reception will follow
at the Smith’s Cove Volunteer Fire Hall. A committal will be
held at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations in
Ben’s memory may be made to the Smith’s Cove
United Baptist Church or the Digby General Hospital. Funeral
arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and
Cremation Services, Kentville.
