Herta Mary Dick Tuesday March 5th 2019

Herta Dick of Lindenwood Manor, formerly of Glenlea and LaSalle, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2019 at the Victoria Hospital with her son, David, at her side and surrounded by the love of her family.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her children: Lori (Gary) Friesen, Dave (Angie) Dick, Lyn (Don) Wiens; her grandchildren: Matthew (Roberta) Friesen, Ryan (Alyssa) Friesen, Jarrett Friesen; Ashley (Andreas) Gerhard, Braedon and Scott Dick; Lauren, Haley and Jessie Wiens; her sister Hedy Thiessen, brothers Irwin (Margaret) Friesen and Rudy (Edith) Friesen; sister-in-laws Margarete Dyck and Margot Friesen; many cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Peter, her parents Heinrich and Justina Friesen, brothers Arnold Friesen and George Friesen.
Mom was born in Winnipeg on November 21, 1932. She grew up on farms in the Elm Creek, Pigeon Lake and Marquette areas. She attended elementary school at George Herbert School and Marquette. Her family moved to Elmwood when mom was in high school and she attended Lord Selkirk and MBCI. Mom was baptized upon her confession of faith on May 13, 1951 at the Schonfelder Mennonite Church. After graduation, mom worked at Ogilvie Flour Mill. She married Peter Dick on Oct. 13, 1956. Mom and Dad farmed in the Glenlea area for 40 years. They raised three children: Lori, David and Lynette. They had big vegetable and fruit gardens, many flower beds and a variety of animals; much to the delight of their children. They taught us the importance of faith, community and a strong work ethic.
Mom and dad moved off the farm and retired to La Salle in 1998. They turned their entire back yard into a garden and continued cultivating many flowers, vegetables and fruit. Mom enjoyed her retirement years; making many new friends, travelling and volunteering.
Mom and dad moved to Lindenwood Manor in 2010, where they developed many new relationships with the residents and staff. Mom was involved in various committees and activities at the Manor. Mom was so happy when her sister Hedy moved into the Manor last year. This time together was special to them both.
Mom enjoyed many hobbies including knitting, crocheting, baking and refinishing furniture, but her greatest passion was sewing. She sewed for her family and for others. She created wedding dresses for her daughters, as well as many bridesmaid dresses. Many people were blessed by mom’s expertise as a seamstress. When friends or neighbours gave mom fabric, she could not wait to start making clothing, crafts or blankets. Some of our favourite memories are of mom sitting at her sewing machine and piecing together fabric scraps, turning them into beautiful blankets for MCC. Many children around the world are being kept warm under mom’s blankets. Mom served her church in many ways. She taught Sunday School, served on several committees and was an active member of the Ladies Fellowship.
Mom also had the gift of hospitality; she made everyone feel welcome in her home. Mom could prepare a meal with the simplest of ingredients and she always had a well-stocked freezer and pantry.
Mom nurtured relationships, especially with her nine grandchildren. They adored their Oma and enjoyed spending time with her. They visited her individually and often organized times when they would all visit together. Eating pizza and watching the Jets were favourite activities for them all. When mom was admitted to the hospital on Feb. 13, her grandchildren quickly rallied and worked to get Oma well again. Someone was there to help her at every meal, read to her, sing and play guitar for her and read devotions and scripture with her. The outpouring of love in mom’s room was powerful! Mom’s body could not be healed, but we are certain that her spirits were lifted. Many other patients also benefited from the love, laughter and impromptu concerts.
Mom was a kind and gracious woman of faith who lived out her love for God in practical and unassuming ways. She will be missed by many.
Special thanks to Dr. Cavers, Dr. Adam and the staff on the fifth floor of Victoria Hospital. Mom was treated with compassion and respect.
A celebration of Mom’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2019 at Glenlea Mennonite Church, 1012 Glenlea Rd, Glenlea, MB, with viewing at 1:00 p.m. Burial to follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Mennonite Collegiate Institute.
