Gilbert J.’s Obituary
Gilbert Poirier, long time resident of Jean-Cote, passed away at the Manoir Du Lac in McLennan, Alberta on March 22, 2019, at the age of 66 years.
Gilbert was well known in the Jean-Cote area for his love of flying. As a teenager he would build his own boomerangs and after many tries would get the boomerang to come back to him. From there he bought little gas planes with a string attached and practiced the landings and takeoffs until he was ready for the bigger remote controls. He crashed many remote controls and one day decided to build his own remote control with a wingspan of five feet and flew that for awhile until it to, crashed.
He joined the air cadets and there he was able to fly gliders. He knew then that flying was in his blood.
As an adult he tried hand-gliding and progressed from a single-seater, no cabin ultralight to a two person ultralight. He felt so free in the air.
Gilbert was also well known for being the first farmer who had leaf-cutter bees in the district. He owned and operated Gilbert’s Pollinating Services serving the Peace Country.
He leaves behind his ex-wife, Noella, two daughters, Joanne Poirier (Ron), Vivian Turcotte (Collin) and one son, Bernard Poirier(Nicole). Seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Three brothers, Henri, Richard (Wanda) Rene (Patty) and one sister Louise Garand (George)
He was pre-deceased by his father, Adrien Poirier in 2010, his sister-in-law, Georgette Poirier in 2013 and his mother, Cecile Poirier in 2017.
There will be no funeral. A private ceremony will follow a later date.
