Genevieve Edith Lucy’s Obituary
Genevieve “Gen” Edith Lucy of Cochrane, Alberta, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at the age of 77 years while at Dulcina Hospice where she was respectfully and kindly cared for during her last months.
Gen was born May 17, 1941 in Beaverlodge, Alberta. Gen’s parents, Frank (of USA) and Gertrude (of England) immigrated to Canada in the early nineteen hundreds. She grew up alongside her three older brothers on the family farm not far from town. After graduating from high school in 1959, Gen followed in the footsteps of her sisters-in-law, Jean and Maureen, who immigrated to Canada in 1948 by pursuing a career in nursing. Gen trained and graduated in 1962 from the Holy Cross School of Nursing in Calgary and later completed Post Graduate courses in New York. Gen had a very successful nursing career which began when she returned to Beaverlodge for three years immediately following her formal training. Subsequent positions included Head Nurse at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary and Director of Nursing in Brooks, Alberta. Gen went on to become Staffing Coordinator at the Foothills Hospital and was instrumental for the introduction of a Patient Classification System that included the implementation of a computer system (the dreaded OSCAR) to the nursing staff at the Foothills Hospital. Gen also worked with the United Nurses of Alberta during a period of strikes to ensure continuing patient care and developed Staffing Rotations working with Unit Managers. Upon her retirement she was contracted by several hospitals in Eastern Canada to help with Staff Scheduling to ensure it was compliant with the various union contracts. In the words of her close friends: “Genevieve had a significant career in Nursing” and “she was quite a remarkable woman.”
In 1973 while nursing in Brooks, Gen met Malcolm who had moved from England to work for her brother, Allan. Gen and Malcolm moved to Calgary from Brooks in 1975 and were married in Beaverlodge on June 7th of the same year. They settled in Montgomery NW where Gen could often be found walking along the beautiful paths enjoying the magnificent views of the Bow River and Rocky mountains with her lovable canine friends, Rippy and Bear. Gen was a very accomplished seamstress and could often be found in her sewing room creating another perfect version of something she had seen and admired.
Gen and Malcolm moved to Cochrane in 2011 and settled into their retirement years while enjoying stunning views of the Rocky Mountains from their living room. As with Calgary, you
would often find Gen out for a walk along the banks of the Bow River. Gen was incredibly strong, private, self-effacing and didn’t like to take credit for her numerous achievements. Her warm, beautiful smile and infectious laugh, just made you feel comfortable. She always seemed to know what advice to give even if it were sober, medical, or otherwise when needed. On occasion, Gen was known to have a sip or two of Wiser’s Deluxe while preparing one of her magnificent meals, “oh, it’s nothing fancy” and “don’t worry about the dishes, the staff cleans up in the morning” you would hear her say. Holidays were always special, especially Christmas, where she would prepare yet another perfect meal while singing along to Boney M or crying to Walter Brennan. Gen was the practical professional and the ever-so-thoughtful and caring wife, sister, aunt and friend. Gen touched so many lives, all enriched by her grace, humility, compassion and love. Forever in our hearts and minds.
Genevieve will be lovingly missed by her husband of forty-three years, Malcolm; sisters-in-law, Connie Dick, Dorene Dick, and Pat Tripp; brother-in-law, Eddy; nephews, Graeme (Sue Colwell) and their children, Jacob and Samantha, Tyler and his daughter, Mykale; nieces, Sandra (James Bell) and son, Corban, Melanie and son, Evan, Sally (Murray King) along with their children, Brady, Tyson, and Serenity, as well as many close friends.
Gen was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Gertrude (nee Stephens); brothers, Allan, Dennis, and Garry; sisters-in-law, Jean Dick (nee Ingleson), Maureen Buzogan (nee Tripp); and brother-in-law, Dougie.
Honouring Genevieve’s request, no funeral service will be held. Her ashes will be placed in the Beaverlodge Riverview Cemetery beside her parents later in the spring.
If friends so desire, donations as expressions of sympathy may be made directly to Dulcina Hospice, 110 Evanspark Manor N.W., Calgary, Alberta T3P 0N4 Telephone: 587-230-5500.
