Frederick Carmen Fred Davis 19312019

Frederick Carmen “Fred” Davis
1931-2019
It is with great sadness we announce the
peacefull passing of Frederick Carmen “Fred”
Davis on Friday, March 1, 2019 in Cumberland Regional
Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan, Born in Springhill he was
a son of the late William Wallace and Rose Elizabeth (Ryan)
Davis.
After an adventurous youth in
Springhill, N.S., Fred took on many challenges during his working
life. In his early years, he was a Coal Miner in Springhill and was a
Dragermen (rescue worker) after the Springhill Mine Explosion on
November 1, 1956. After leaving the mines, Fred joined the Canadian
Armed Forces. Initially, Fred was in the Army Signal Corp, and then as
a Fireman in the Air Force. Fred and his family had several postings
during his military career, including four years in France with the
Canadian contingent of NATO. On retirement from the
military, Fred was a Correctional Officer at both Dorchester and
Springhill Penitentiaries. Throughout his life, Fred was an
extraordinary provider and protector of his family.
In 1967 Fred completed construction of
the family centennial project: a cottage at Heather Beach.
Needless to say, Fred and family had many years of fun and happiness
at the “beach”.
For many years in Toronto, Fred was a
minor league coach of both baseball and hockey. He was a passionate
leader and mentor, emphasizing both competitiveness and fun. After
moving to Amherst from Greenwood, N.S., Fred developed a passion for
the Junior A hockey team “Amherst Ramblers”.
Fred was an executive on the management team, benefactor,
fund raiser, and fan.
In 1994, Fred was appointed to the
Amherst Board of Police Commissioners. During his tenure, he supported
many police and community initiatives, including relocation of the
police station to temporary facilities while a new police station was
under development. Fred retired from the Amherst Police Commission as
Chairman in 1998.
Fred was an avid deer hunter and awesome
rough carpenter/handyman.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of
64 years Carole (Hayes), son Paul (Francine), daughter Cindy, a sister
Rosanna, sister-in-law Shelly Hayes, brothers-in-law Jim Hayes and
Tommy Henwood, several nieces and nephews, and many good
friends.
Besides his parents, Fred was
predeceased by brothers William “Billy”, and Walter
Davis.
Our family appreciates the compassion,
and professional care provided by Care Givers, Nurses, and Doctors of
Centennial Villa, Gables Lodge, and The Cumberland Regional Health
Care Centre. Cherish today, for we know not what tomorrow
will bring.
