Edna Evelyn Power 19282019

Edna Evelyn Power
1928-2019
At Whisperwood
Villa on Monday, March 18, 2019, with her friend David Robinson at her
side, of Edna Evelyn Power, 90 years. Edna was the only child of
Nicholas and Mary Power of Charlottetown, who pre-deceased her. Her
father worked for Canada Packers, providing a good living for his
family, who were faithful members of St. Dunstan’s Basilica
and Holy Redeemer Church. Edna attended St. Joseph’s Convent
School on Pownal Street, then Prince of Wales College. She studied at
the University of New Brunswick, earning a micro-biology degree. She
then worked for nearly 30 years at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in
Saint John, New Brunswick, under the guidance of Dr. E.A.G. Branch,
where she ran a laboratory that helped to develop many of the
country’s early antibiotics. She returned to her family home
in Charlottetown to retire with her lifelong best friend and workmate,
Ruth Shankle, thirty years ago. She and Ruth travelled widely and she
enjoyed tennis, reading, bridge, music, and participation in the
affairs of the Catholic Women’s League. Ruth pre-deceased
her in 2017. In her later years she was lovingly cared for by a team
of caregivers from Home Instead PEI, of whom she was inordinately
fond.
Resting in
Hennessey Cutcliffe Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on
Thursday, March 21st from the Church of the
Most Holy Redeemer at 2:00 p.m. Interment at a later date in the Roman
Catholic Cemetery. No visitation by personal request. Memorials to the
Holy Redeemer Church or the University of New Brunswick, would be
appreciated.
