Edna Dunbar
1938-2019
Edna Dunbar, 80, peacefully passed away the morning of March
23, 2019, in the Valley View Villa. Born on September 11, 1938 in New
Glasgow, NS, to James and Gladys Hayes, she was the eldest of 5
children. She worked as a receptionist for Frank Sobey. In 1959, Edna
graduated from Payzant Memorial Nursing School in Windsor, NS, and
worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, ON, and as a
private duty nurse when she returned to Nova Scotia. Her love of her
grandchildren was her number one gift. She also enjoyed knitting,
baking, playing cards with family and friends, as well as enjoying her
love of music, dancing and enjoying the warmth of friends when they
visited. She is survived by her children: Howie Dunbar (Cindy);
Michael Dunbar; Tom Dunbar (Cindy); Norine Martin (Darren); her
grandchildren: Carli Reid (Philip); Richard Dunbar (Charlena); TJ
Dunbar (Shannon); Samantha Dunbar; Michael Martin; Kelsie Martin;
Lauren Martin; her great-grandchildren: Carli Dunbar; Brett
Heatherington; Brady Heatherington; siblings: Jim Hayes (Helen);
Jeannie Sampson (Howie); brother-in-law, Kenny Dooley; nieces and
nephews: Kent Dooley; Ryan Dooley (Lorena); Derrick Smith; Heidi
Hayes; and Harlen Hayes. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman
“Toby”; a sister, Margaret Dooley; brother, Thomas
Hayes; niece, Nancy Lee Hayes. A special thank you to the staff at
Valley View Villa for their truly caring ways to both Edna and the
family. They made the final leg of her journey an easy one. A public
graveside service will be held at 2 pm Sunday, March 31, in
Abercrombie Cemetery, with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating.
Donations in her honor may be made to the Abercrombie Community
Centre. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.H. Porter
Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
