Cecilia “Maureen” MacGillivray
MacGillivray, Maureen, of
Antigonish passed away on March 28, 2019, in St. Martha’s
Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Antigonish, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred
and Cecelia (Chisholm) MacGillivray.
Maureen was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Teacher’s
College and St. Francis Xavier University. She spent the
first six years of her teaching career in Antigonish, and from there
she spent a number of years teaching in Dartmouth and
Halifax. Following the death of her father, she returned to
teaching in Antigonish, where she was also the recording secretary on
the executive of the Teacher’s Union. Upon
retirement, she was held the same position for the executive of the
retired teachers. She loved the children she taught and was
delighted when they greeted her after her retirement.
Her church was of the utmost importance to her, and she was
an active member of the CWL and a Eucharistic minister. She
was also involved with the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Martha’s
Regional Hospital and was Eucharistic minister at the hospital,
also. Maureen loved to travel, and visited all through North
American, Europe, and Asia.
She is survived by her brother, Joseph, Antigonish; and her
special friend, Joanne DeCoste, Antigonish.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 6 to 9pm in C.L. Curry
Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish. Funeral Mass
will be held Monday at 11:00am in St. Ninian Cathedral, Reverend
Donald MacGillivray presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery
at a later date.
