Obituary for
Brian Wong
After a spirited and courageous battle with stage IV nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), Brian Wong Wing Hang, passed away in the early morning of February 28, 2019 in comfort and surrounded by love.
Brian is survived by his beloved wife, Bonita Lee; his mother, Lee Wai Yung; father, Wong Kim; brother, Patrick Wong; sister-in-law, Cecilia Poon; and niece, Lydia Wong. His resilience and sense of humor during his illness will be missed by many friends and well wishers who have cheered him on along his fight against the cancer.
Brian came from Hong Kong to Edmonton in 1981 and graduated with a MSc computing science at the University of Alberta in 1989. During his career as a computer consultant and systems analyst, he had worked in various North American cities and spent the last 13 years of his career, working in Honolulu till Nov 2013 when he was diagnosed with NPC. The first thing he confirmed before accepting the job in Honolulu was that badminton clubs were available and accessible. He made great friends with colleagues and was remembered by many funny quirky comments and his keen sense of humor. He had many nicknames given by fellow players and friends over the years: 大佬大家姐 “Big brother Big sister” (for always willing to help), 水上飄 “floating on water” and 打不死 “invincible” (in reference to his skills in defensive play during badminton). He liked programming and his focus in work was illustrated by an especially neat handwriting that would only manifest when he was writing programs. His mind was filled with logic which led to potent questions that he would voice discreetly but loudly among friends. While having a good mind for money matters and great abilities to make a good deal, his heart was most generous towards friends and families.
Brian had an enormous capacity to love his family and friends and to enjoy life to the fullest. He was playing badminton once a week up till March 2018 during his illness. He liked music with a fast beat and energy but also enjoyed romantic songs. He had the best smile and an adorable laugh accompanied by tears when encountering silly situations or expressions. He always said that not needing to eat would be a better life but also counted every blessing when he had the wonderful appetite when he was taking dexamethasone.
Brian and his wife, Bonita, his parents and his brother are most grateful for the wonderful care and every gesture of kindness he has received from all members of the healthcare team and supportive staff as well as friends and family who always provided great support and advice. There are too many special persons for us to name and we hope our appreciation has come through our interactions over the years.
Brian would love for us to remember him with a smile, a laugh and pay forward every kindness.
Friends and families may pay their respects on Saturday, March 9 from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 111 Avenue NW, Edmonton.
A Funeral Service will take place on Sunday, March 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel with cremation to follow in Park Memorial Crematorium.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to make a cash donation to the Alberta Health Service Palliative Home Care Program which provides tremendous support for patients in need in Edmonton. Contributions will be collected at the funeral or money can be deposited before May 7, 2019 to HSBC Bank Canada Account CAHKBC139-127119-203 with Bonita Lee as the account holder.
