Donald Bentley Smith
On Friday March 8th, 2019, Donald Bentley Smith passed away at his home in Ottawa at the age of 94, surrounded by Mary MacIsaac Smith, his wife of 67 years, and two of his children, Martha and Colin.
Born on June 8th, 1924 in Pugwash, Nova Scotia,he grew up on a wheat farm near Eatonia, Saskatchewan. Don studied at the University of Saskatchewan and graduated in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba with the Gold Medal in 1946. He worked for Bell Canada in Montreal and Ottawa.
He is survived by Mary, and his children Janet (Bob), Laurie (Gabe), Gordon (Lisa), Martha, Marian and Colin (Shealagh). Also grandchildren Laura, Christina, Elizabeth, Emily, Mike, Graham, Aaron, Jacob and great-granddaughters Evelyn and Eliska ‘Ellie’.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. A kind and gentle man, with a subtle sense of humour. He was a planner in his career and in his life, a dedicated volunteer in his retirement, and the recipient of the Benemerenti medal from the Vatican for his social action work.
A funeral mass will take place at Our Lady of Fatima church,153 Woodroffe Avenue, Ottawa, on Wednesday March 13th at 11:00 a.m., with a reception following in the parish hall.
