The family of Stewart Henry Coles of Midland, Ontario is saddened to announce his passing and are grateful for the love, kindness, humor and support that he brought into our lives. Stew stayed at his home until the end. He left peacefully with loving family at his side.
Born and raised in Toronto, Stew attended North Toronto Secondary School and married his sweetheart Dorothy Doner from Northern Secondary School in 1955. He setup a successful furniture distribution business that supported him and family with a comfortable lifestyle. In many of those years he fulfilled his childhood dream by driving a variety of Cadillacs. He spent most of his retirement years with Dorothy in Midland, Ontario where they have been happy to make a new circle of friends.
Stewart leaves behind his grateful family, wife Dorothy (nee Doner), son Glenn and daughter Dianne. He will be missed by brother Walter (and wife Jackie), sister Arlene and sister-in-law Nan along with many nieces and nephews who often referred to him as ‘Cool Uncle Stew’. Stewart joins his deceased parents Walter ‘Harry’ Coles and Barbara (nee Stewart) along with his sister Marilyn.
Our joyous memories as a family include various homes in the Toronto area and wonderful experiences for over three decades at our cottage on Shadow Lake. Stew loved to play games and we will always think of him when we play Canasta or Settlers of Catan. To those who know the board game, Stew almost always built the longest road. He also loved playing with friends in local Bridge clubs, where he was known to be an unconventional player who preferred ‘gut bridge’ to bidding standards.
One of Stewart’s loves was golf, and he enjoyed playing many games with friends at Uplands Golf Course in Thornhill and Brooklea Golf Course in Midland. He also loved to watch golf on television. One of his highlight moments was playing in a foursome with Greg Norman in a Pro-Am tournament before the Canadian Open.
Following Stewart’s desires, cremation has already taken place. The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life Gathering in Midland within a few weeks. Details and date will be announced on the LeClair Tribute web listing in the coming days. We offer extreme gratitude to the doctors, nurses, medical staff and caregivers who helped so much in providing Stew with enhanced quality of life over many years.
In lieu of flowers we would greatly appreciate donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada or Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Messages are welcomed and appreciated in the Tribute book at www.leclaircremationcentre.ca/listings
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Stewart Henry Coles October 11 1931 March 4 2019 (age 87)..
