The family of Stan Vickers, 92, wish to announce his peaceful passing on Friday, February 22, 2019, with his family at his side. He was born (November 21, 1926) and raised in Sydney Mines, living his entire life in the family home. He was the son of the late Harry and Ellen (Forrest) Vickers. He was a retired employee of CNR, Marine Atlantic, and an active member of Carman United Church, serving in many roles.
During his 37 years of retirement, Stan was a core member of Kiwanis Golden K, serving in many important positions, including Lieutenant Governor of Eastern Canada and the Caribbean. He enjoyed sports throughout his lifetime, including bowling and hockey. In 2014, at the age of 87, he and his team won the CN Todd bowling tournament in Moncton. He enjoyed life, travelling, gardening, boating, and spending time at the cabin, listening and sharing stories at the fireplace he built.
Stan was a kind, hardworking, humble, community and family focused man of integrity and strong family values; a true gentleman. He taught so much to so many, and will be missed.
Stan is survived by his wife Jean (Taylor), daughter Lynn, sons Bruce (Carol), Eric and Gary, special grandson Paul (Janie), and daughter-in-law Elizabeth. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Stan was predeceased by his son Stuart. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, being predeceased by sisters Mildred MacKay, Thelma Brown, Gretta Clarke, and Olive Legere, and brothers Percy, Murray, Harry, Purves, Raymond, Matthew and Russell.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Stan’s life will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. in Carman United Church, Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stan’s memory may be made to Carman United Church, the Kidney Foundation, or charity of one’s choice.
