Shirley Yvonne MacKay
1931-2019
Shirley Yvonne MacKay– 87, Bible Hill, passed away
peacefully on Thursday morning, January 31, 2019, at Vimy Court, Bible
Hill. Born in North River, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and
Emma (MacRae) MacQuarrie.
In earlier years, Shirley worked at Stanfield’s and
in 1957 she moved to Hinton, Alberta, where she worked in a bakery.
Upon returning to Truro in 1969, she went back to
Stanfield’s and then worked as a cashier at Town Grocery.
Family meant everything to Shirley and she loved cooking, baking and
hosting family dinners. She enjoyed doing crafts, especially
needlepoint, and was a great follower of Crystal Cathedral and watched
it every Sunday on television. She had a soft spot in her heart for
animals, especially her grand dogs!
Shirley is survived by her children, Gary (Mary Ann) MacKay,
River John; Irma (Cam) MacDonald, Truro; Robert (Sharlene) MacKay,
Milford; Joyce (Jim) Saulnier, Bible Hill; grandchildren, John
“Jody” (Tammy) Totten, Dawn (Tom) Hauser, Quentin (Linda)
MacKay, Danny (Katie) MacKay, Anna MacKay (Chris Currie); eleven great
grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; sister, Margaret
Roode, Truro; brother, Edwin (Carol) MacQuarrie, North River;
brother-in-law, Elmon Langille, New Annan; several nieces and nephews;
special friend, Hazel MacKeen, who Mom formed a special bond with.
Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Milton
Robert MacKay; son-in-law, John Totten; siblings, Isaac (Violet), Carl
(Lola), George, Florence, Paul in infancy.
Special thanks are extended to the amazing staff at Vimy
Court for their wonderful care over the past six years.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where the funeral service
will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, February 3, 2019, Reverend Valerie
Kingsbury officiating. Reception will follow. Family flowers
only. If so desired, donations in Shirley’s memory to
Colchester SPCA or Vimy Court Palliative Care are welcomed. Private
