It is with heavy hearts that
the family of Peter Raymond Kennedy announces his passing, which took
place on February 5, 2019, at the age of 63
years.
Peter will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 34 years,
Sheila, and his children, Lisa (Joel) Robichaud, Tara (Jaryd)
Forgeron, and Laura (Caleb Power). Peter will also be fondly
remembered by his three grandchildren, Jack, Hunter, and Benjamin, his
brother, Dave (Bev), and sister, Heather MacQueen.
Peter was predeceased by his father and mother, Raymond and
Bette Kennedy, and brother-in-law, Art MacQueen.
Peter was an avid sailor in his younger years. He was King of
Prams at age 12 in Baddeck during Centennial year. Later, he sailed
with “brother Dave” in Snipe Fleet, and circumvented
Newfoundland with his father, Raymond. Peter played hockey for RHS,
winning the provincial championship three years in a row, and greatly
admired his coach, Bob MacKenzie. He also played hockey while
attending NSAC in Truro. Peter enjoyed years of playing squash at the
YMCA with his wife, Sheila. He also coached soccer from 1998-2010 at
Malcolm Munroe Junior High and the Riverview Soccer Club, where he was
president of the league for several years. He finished off his soccer
career by winning the provincial title in 2010 and coaching his team
at Nationals in Ontario.
Peter was a University of Guelph graduate in Animal Science
and later received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ontario
Veterinary College in 1982. He worked for 30 years with Kennedy Animal
Hospital until his double lung transplant in 2013. Peter and his wife,
Sheila, started a pulmonary support group in Cape Breton to help
others with similar lung conditions. Peter was so grateful to have
almost six “bonus years” of life, and this would not have
been possible without his donor, and their family. TYD (To Your
Donor).
After his transplant, he continued to enjoy many great times
with family and close friends. Peter was very much a family man. He
loved his wife, Sheila from the first time he laid eyes on her, and
was so proud of his three girls. He encouraged and loved them in all
aspects of their lives with his kind and gentle nature. He will be
deeply missed.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday,
February 8 from 4-7p.m. The funeral service will be held at the United
Protestant Church of Sydney River on Saturday, February 9 at 2 p.m.,
with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Reception to
follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Canadian
Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or a charity of choice. To give others a
second chance at life, the family would also like to encourage others
to sign their donor cards and communicate their wishes to their loved
ones.
