Olga Shabits 2019

Olga Shabits
April 17, 1921 – February 10, 2019

Olga Shabits, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away at the Canora Gateway Lodge on February 10, 2019, at the age of 97 years.
Olga was born April 17, 1921, to John and Dora (Rekush) Chabun in the Amsterdam district, SK. She was one of seven children. Olga and her siblings attended Gogol School. She enjoyed sharing memories of how they had to make the distance on foot or by horse and the adventures they had along the way. Being raised by pioneers, Olga developed a strong faith through prayer, an exceptional work ethic and a love for the outdoors, nature and animals.
Olga married Michael Shabits on October 18, 1941 and together, they farmed in the district. In 1952, they moved to Amsterdam, SK, where Mike became the Postmaster. An excellent cook and gardener, Olga produced a bounty of vegetables and beautiful flower gardens. She was a woman with extraordinary patience, compassion and kindness. Her quiet, likable manner made her a joy to be around. Her kind spirit and thoughtfulness were known by many. Olga lived her life with the attitude of service above self. Like many others of her generation, she faced challenges and adversity with a quiet strength and dignity. With no complaints, but an abundance of hard work, she demonstrated an extraordinary inner strength and strong will.
Until 2011, Olga lived in Amsterdam, SK, when she moved to Canora, SK. In 2013, she became a resident of the Canora Gateway Lodge, where she continued to reside until her passing on February 10, 2019. Olga was devoted to her family and her love was unconditional. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Olga was predeceased by her parents, John and Dora; husband, Michael; sisters: Lavinia, in infancy, Ann, Mary and Lillian; and her brothers, Mike and Steve. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Virginia and Sydney (Michelle); grandchildren: Kara (Brian), Shauna, Brittney and Tyler; her great-grandchild, Brianne; and niece, Leona (Anton); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In Olga’s honor, a Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 15, 2019 from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 16, 2019, from Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Canora, SK, both with Very Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac, as Celebrant.
