Muriel Smith
July 19, 1924 – February 8, 2019
Gladys Muriel Celeste Smith (nee MacDougall) passed away peacefully with family by her side on Friday, February 8, 2019, in her 95th year, at Highview Residence in Kitchener, Ontario. Predeceased by the love of her life, husband John Munro Smith, Muriel is survived by three daughters Gladys Watson and her partner Sandy, Margaret Smith, and Beverley Aikenhead and her husband Jim. Loving grandmother of Cailey and her husband Lee, Ian and his wife Nicole, and Graham and his partner Kristine. Adoring Nana to her great-granddaughters Madelyn, Norah, and Avary.
Born in 1924 to Alma and Lyle MacDougall, Muriel lived her childhood years in the MacDougall family farmhouse near Fulton, Ontario, attended Smithville High School, and worked at the Royal Bank in Hamilton. Muriel fell in love with theology student John Smith while he was ministering at Fulton Stone Church. They were married in 1944, beginning her life-long career as United Church minister’s wife. From Cabri, Saskatchewan to Old Windham, Georgetown, and Whitby, Ontario, Muriel actively engaged in church and community life, finding time in later years to work at the local public library. Kind, energetic, determined, organized, dedicated to family, loyal to friends, Muriel is remembered for her ingenuity and creativity, always finding a way to make the most from the least. Muriel delighted in time spent at the family cottage in Haliburton, but she also enjoyed travelling with John, from early years with a tent, to mid-life road trips with the family trailer, to later-life trips abroad with friends.
In recent years, Muriel faced unexpected health challenges with courage and grace, always with a smile.
To the staff at Highview Residence in Kitchener, Ontario, our deepest appreciation for your attentive and affectionate care and support.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at St. Luke’s United Church, 1620 Franklin Boulevard, Cambridge, Ontario, N3C 1P2 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life service following in the sanctuary at 2:00 p.m. Please join the family for a reception afterwards in the church hall.
