Mary “Gerri” Geraldine Walker
February 16, 1940 – January 31, 2019
WALKER, Mary Geraldine “Gerri” (nee Doyle) age 78 years of Dartmouth passed away peacefully January 31, 2019 at the Victoria General Hospital. Born in Prince Edward Island she was a daughter of the late Raymond & Loretta (Larkin) Doyle. She was predeceased by her husband Raphael “Ray” Walker, her brother Derrill Doyle. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Dorothy Walker and Mary Walker, brother, Alan Doyle, sister, Rosemary MacCormack, several nieces and nephews, and long time friend, Donalda Dubois, and a countless circle of friends who are grateful to have had Gerri in their lives.
Gerri came to Dartmouth in 1971 to teach at John Martin Junior High, retiring in 1994. Recently, a former student contacted Gerri to thank her for being like a mother to her and bringing her through the toughest time of her life. Her students were Number One. She went above and beyond to bring out the best in them. Many students who had never travelled before visited Disney World and other Florida attractions, with money being raised by selling cans of frozen lobster garnered from various businesses by a zealous teacher!
Being the recipient of the Marshall McLuhan Distinguished Teaching Award, one of only three presented to educators in Nova Scotia, was testament to the respect and love her students and fellow teachers had for her.
Gerri was diverse. She was a music lover, a tap dancer, an accomplished bridge player, a legendary party hostess, a Shubie Park lover where she daily walked her beloved dogs, Chloe and Teddy, and bonded with fellow pet owners. Gerri trained her Eurasier Chloe and proudly displayed all of Chloe’s prestigious awards. Her intense determination was evident in all aspects of her daily life.
Gerri will always be remembered as a forever friend.
