OBITUARY
Margaret “Peggy” Alice (McCartan) Adamson
May 14, 1927 – February 1, 2019
91, of Dartmouth passed away peacefully in the Halifax Infirmary on February 1, 2019, with family by her side. Born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan on May 14, 1927 she was the daughter of Irish and German immigrants, the late John and Hattie (Rottwheiler) McCartan.
Peggy spent her childhood in Rosetown during the depression. She entered the Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing in Calgary, graduating as an RN in 1949. In 1951 she became a stewardess for Trans-Canada Airlines, flying the eastern seaboard out of Moncton, New Brunswick. During her flying career she met a number of interesting people including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sonja Henie, Hank Snow and her future husband and fellow TCA employee, Garnet.
After her flying career, while raising her family in Dartmouth, Peggy had a long and successful career as an RN, working part time for the Nova Scotia RN Private Duty Registry.
At age 50 she began working part time at Northwood in Halifax. In 2009, after 60 years of practice as an RN, she retired at age 81.
Throughout the years Peggy had many interests. She was an accomplished speed skater and an avid curler. She enjoyed traveling, golfing, quilting, bridge, gardening and especially time with family.
In 2014, she and husband Garnet moved to Parkland On the Lakes in Dartmouth.
Peggy will be sadly missed by son Michael (Karen), Kentville; daughters Kelley, Abbotsford BC and Kristi (Richard) Dartmouth; grandchildren Ryan, Tarah (Adam), Danielle (DJ), and Lauren (Cameron); great grandchildren Chloe, Carter and Delilah; several nieces and nephews.
Peggy was predeceased by her brother James and Garnet, her husband of 63 years.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, Dartmouth.
At Peggy’s request, a private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
A special thank you to the nursing staff of 6.1 at the Halifax Infirmary.
