Lorna MacQuarrie 19292019

It is with broken hearts we
announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother,
Lorna Mildred MacQuarrie, of Sydney, on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at
home in the arms of her son, Scott.
Lorna was born January 2, 1929, to Gordon and Evelyn (Lewis)
Lewis of Point Edward.
She graduated from Sydney Academy and later attended Business
College in Montreal. In her early years, Lorna worked for the
chartered accounting firm of Nightingale-Hayman, followed by a few
years at CJCB radio, before moving on to spend over 30 years working
for Dr. Bev Trask, who was joined over the years by Dr. Austin
MacDonald, Dr. Bob Baily, and Dr. Freeman.
In 1951, Lorna married Gar MacQuarrie and they spent 66
wonderful years together in the north end of Sydney, until
dad’s passing in 2017.
She was very active in the community and in her churches,
which were St. John’s in Point Edward, St. Georges and
Church of Christ the King in Sydney. Lorna was a lifelong member of
the Louisbourg chapter of the I.O.D.E. and the ladies guilds of her
churches. She collected for the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart
and Stroke Foundation and helped out with many other organizations.
Lorna was the first female inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at
Sydney Academy, where she played basketball and later
coached.
She spent many hours at rinks, ball fields and tennis courts
when her son, Scott was growing up, but when her grandsons, Curt and
Lee came along, she and Gar rarely missed an opportunity to watch Curt
play rugby and Lee play basketball. They were both so
proud.
Lorna is survived by her son, Scott (Cindy
O’Handley and her children, Jessica and David Pike);
grandsons, Curt, his wife, Alison and their daughter, Harper,
Nuneaton, England and Lee, Sydney and their mother, Shelly Fedora. She
is also survived by sisters, Eva Lampman, St. Catharines, ON and
Gwennie MacDermid, Wreck Cove; brother, Kevin MacAskill and his wife,
Gail, Nelson BC; sister-in-law, Eleanor Lewis, St. Catharines, ON;
goddaughter, Debbie Rudderham, St. Catharines, ON, along with many
nieces, nephews, great friends and neighbors.
Besides her parents, Lorna was predeceased by her husband,
Gar; sister, Thelma Cunningham; brother, Billy Lewis; sister-in-law,
Gerry MacQuarrie, Sydney; brothers-in-law, Jack Cunningham, Frank
Reilly and Eugene Lampman, all of St. Catharines, ON and Ian
MacDermid, Wreck Cove.
A special thanks to Dr. Greg Myatt and Janice for the many
years of care, Dr. Khodadad and Eleanor for your care these last two
years and recently for the excellent care given by all the VON who
came to visit. You are all exceptional people. To Dr.
D’Intino and the team at Palliative Care, it was short, but
what you do is truly amazing. We would like to give a very special
thank you to Cindy, Shelly, Arlene, Linda, Shirley, Jessie and Janette
for their support over these past three weeks. It is so much
appreciated. Also, to Scott’s employer, Saltwire for
allowing him a leave to be able to spend this time to be with his
mother. It meant the world to him.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on
Sunday, February 10 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will
be held at the Church of Christ the King, Trinity Ave., Sydney on
Monday, February 11 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating.
Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later
date.
Memorials may be made to the Church of Christ the King, the
Cancer Center at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.

Mom, your prayers
were answered. The road home was short and not too bumpy
and I know dad was getting lonely. You are
home.
