OBITUARY
Kristina Zekic
September 1, 1930 – January 22, 2019
We, their family, are sad to announce that Mihailo passed suddenly on Jan 9 at Richmond Hospital while recovering from a serious fall on Jan 5. The past 4 years of his life were difficult as he battled various health issues. His wife Kristina also passed at Richmond Hospital on Jan 22, battling cancer. They were married for 66 years. Amazingly, they passed within 2 weeks of each other and are now being buried together!
Born in a small village near Srebrenica, Bosnia, Mihailo immigrated to Canada as a refugee after WWII in the early 1950s. He was a war veteran, fighting along side the British army against the Nazi and Communist forces. Arriving in Ontario, he met his beautiful wife Kristina, who he happily married in 1952. Kristina was of Ukranian descent and was raised in a small village near Slavonski Brod, Croatia. She also was a war refugee. Their daughter Maria was born in 1953, after which Mihailo decided to move west. So they relocated to Vancouver, BC. after which their three sons Jovan, Mark and Lazar were born.
Mihailo worked very hard in construction to provide for his family, often working out of town for months at a time. Kristina was a devoted housewife and mother. Mihailo and Kristina helped many fellow immigrants by giving them free lodgings in their home while they got themselves established in Canada. They moved to California in 1963 and returned in 1966, settling finally in Richmond, where they had lived for over 50 years.
Mihailo was a Christian man and a founding member of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church in Vancouver. Most of his family’s social lives revolved around activities at the church. Kristina was a cheerful Christian woman that lived for her family.
Gardening, music, dancing, getting together with friends, making wine and sun bathing were some of Mihailo’s favorite things to do. Kristina loved cooking, crocheting, fishing and talking with friends.
The loss of their youngest son Lazar at 18 yrs old was a very difficult time for Mihailo and his family. The birth of their grandchildren brought much joy to both of them. They retired early, becoming part-time babysitters and then later “Snowbirds” spending the winters in Arizona for about 25 years. Mihailo made several trips back to Bosnia and helped his family financially.
Mihailo and Kristina were honest , hard working people who had a strong Christian faiths. We, their family, believe that they are now enjoying eternity with their Savior, Jesus Christ.
Thank you, Dad (Tata) and Grandpa (Djedo) for your love and hard work over the years! Thank you Mom and Baba (Grandma) for lalways feeding us and looking after us all. God bless you and may you rest in peace!
Also, as Mihailo’ and Kristina’s family, we take this opportunity to thank all of our friends for their love and support and look forward to seeing you at the prayer and funeral services!
Sincerely,
Mihailo and Kristina Zekic’s family
