Kenneth Paul Cogan
March 30, 1947 – February 13, 2019
On February 13, 2019, we had one last drink with Ken. Always the host with the most, Ken was known to keep everyone’s glass full, ensuring everyone was having a good time. Born in 1947 in North Sydney, Ken was a son of the late Theodore and Anne (Egan) Cogan. He moved from Cape Breton to Bedford when he was in high school and then married and raised his family in Hammonds Plains. A very active and social person, Ken was a proud member of the Bedford Barons suburban hockey team. He then went on to play hockey in the Bedford Seniors Gentleman’s league. Ken loved to play golf at Avon Valley, where he was a member for many years. He enjoyed both sports right up to the time his illness interfered. Cars were a true passion for Ken. He enjoyed the auction and car shows, where he would show his beautiful red Corvette. You never saw Ken with a dirty vehicle, he even enjoyed cleaning them! For 35 years Ken worked for the Registry of Motor Vehicles (Service Nova Scotia). He held many positions throughout his career, including coordinator for the driver education and motorcycle safety program. He retired in 2008 as the Deputy Registrar for the Province of Nova Scotia. Ken’s family was his light and pride. He was married to his loving and devoted wife Karen (Howard) for 43 years. Karen was his greatest source of strength throughout his illness. Ken was particularly proud of his sons, Colin (Karen) and Paul (Lizz); and loved his grandsons, Jamie and Ben (their mother, Amy) and Findley. Ken was always thrilled to spend time with his grandchildren. In addition to his immediate family, Ken is survived by his brothers, Pat (Sharon) of Ontario; Kieran (Tink) of New Brunswick; Erin (Bev) of Bedford; and his sister, Connie (Guy) of Bedford. Ken had a very large extended family including many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws who will all miss him very much. Ken was blessed to have many lifelong friends and wonderful neighbours who were like family to him. Before his illness, some of Ken’s most fond memories were of parties, trips and other fun times with his friends and neighbours. They were all very dedicated to making sure he had lots of visits and outings while he was in care. There will be a celebration of Ken’s life on Wednesday, February 20th at 1:30 p.m. in Saint Ignatius Catholic Church in Bedford with a reception to follow in the church hall. Private family burial will be held at a later date. Donations can be made in Ken’s name to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice. Karen, Colin and Paul would like to make a special note of thanks to the wonderful staff at The Madeline Assisted Living Home, where Ken received loving and personalized care.
Now pour your favorite drink and have a cheers to Ken, it’s noon somewhere!
