Macdougall, Dr. John Angus MD. (Retired)
After a valiant and largely successful fight with Old Age, Dr. Macdougall finally succumbed to the eventual demise that afflicts us all. We did not “lose him”, nor did he “pass away”; he died! – on February 24th at age 87, as a consequence of his determined time in this life.
Dr. Macdougall attended high school at Vaughan Road Collegiate and achieved his Senior Matriculation in 1950. He moved with his parents and family to Peterborough, Ontario, and started to work as a salesman in a furniture store. Subsequently, he enrolled in an apprenticeship program in Electrical and Mechanical Drafting at Canadian General Electric Company in Peterborough, graduating with distinction.
He had a subsequent and significant meeting with Marian Comrie Manley his future wife, as determined by her at that time. His heart was won and they were married in 1956. With her encouragement, he was accepted into Medical School at the University of Toronto. He graduated in 1963, with the help of an endowment provided by the Canadian Armed Forces and upon graduation, he continued his career with the Military. His service in the Military included Gimli, Manitoba, Summerside, P.E.I., a one-year program in Public Health at the University of Toronto, a position as the Senior Medical Officer at Canadian Forces Base, Trenton, Ontario, Assistant Command Surgeon’s Office at the same unit, a posting to San Antonio, Texas for a course in Aerospace Medicine, two postings at the Defence & Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine in Toronto, Ontario where he was appointed as the Director of Aerospace Medical Training. Dr. Macdougall was also selected to represent the Surgeon General of the Canadian Forces for a three-year period as the Medical Liaison Officer with an office in the Canadian Embassy and the Pentagon in Washington D.C.
Upon retiring from the Military due to advancing age, (55 years) Dr. Macdougall continued to work in the field of Occupational Medicine with a variety of employers, including among others, the RCMP and Ontario Hydro.
John Macdougall is predeceased by his wife Marian, infant daughter Erin Louise and daughter in law Betty Anne Macdougall. He is survived by his children, John Eric and his partner Anne, Lee Anne Crevier and her husband Steve, James Cameron and his partner Kate, Warren Andrew and his wife Angie, and Sean David and his wife Dawn as well as grandchildren: Taylor and his wife Alanna, Christopher, Logan, Luke and his wife Sam, Calina, Megan, Mason, Ava, Declan, Mackenzie and Riley and his great granddaughter Julia. He is also survived by his longtime friend Susan Cunningham and her daughters Rebecca and Emma-Nell, his god-daughter. A celebration of life is planned for the summer.
