Jean P. Smith
1937-2019
Jean P. Smith of Moncton passed away at The Moncton
Hospital on Monday, February 04, 2019 surrounded by family. Jean was
born in London, England to Rose and Angelo Avie. She had a
brother Alan Avie who still resides in London. She moved to
Canada at the age of 18. Regardless of how busy her life was
raising her children, she never hesitated to contribute to her
community. Giving back to various charity organizations was
a passion for her. She spent 25 years on the board of
directors for Crossroads for Women, worked with family planning
organization, worked extensively with Big Brothers Big Sisters and
started Wiser Women’s Coalition to help support
women’s initiatives. She also had a great
affection for local performance, and enjoyed acting, directing, and
producing plays in her community through Curtain Call
Theatre.
Jean spent the last 11 years battling various
health issues including dementia. Her strength and
resiliency were obvious to all who knew her. While still at
home she enjoyed gardening, birds, flowers, and watching comedy
shows. She kept up with her favourite sports, watching
tennis, soccer, horse racing, and figure skating. She was
passionate in all she did. Until the very end of her journey
her sharp wit and sense of humour were evident to us all. She
brought love, kindness and inclusion to all she
met.
She will be missed greatly by friends and family,
left to mourn are daughters, Sheila Landry (Merton), Gina
Myers (Tammy) both of Dieppe; sons, Gary Melanson of Calgary, AB and
Dale Melanson of Moncton; brother, Alan Avie; granddaughter, Meaghan
Nadon (Alex) of Miramichi.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a son,
