Obituary of Horst “Harry” Ims
It is with deep sadness and heartfelt grief, that the family announces the peaceful passing of Horst Otto Herbert Ims (better known as Harry), on February 19,2019 at Columbia Forest Long Term Care in his 95th year. Harry is predeceased by his parents, sister, brother-in-law and nephew.
Harry was the beloved husband of Erika for over 70 years. Dear father of daughter’s Doris (Ian McConnell), Susan (friend Bob Huck), Sheila (Butch Boettger) and sons Ted (Janice) and Harry (Liz). Remembered by his eleven grandchildren Jeff, Holly, Allison, Sarah, Tara, Kylie, Bradley, Chelsea, Meggie, Jessie, Wesley and their spouses and their partners. Great Grandfather of 15 children.
He worked in the rocket industry during WW II. Harry and Erika immigrated to Canada, in 1953, via Pier 21. After a few years, in Toronto, employed by Phillips Electric then Bay Bloor Radio, Harry resettled his wife and family, in Waterloo where he established and taught the course of Radio TV Electronics. The introduction of Community Colleges forced a career change. Upon completing the requirements from ITT, and surviving a plane crash, Harry eventually became Defensive Early Warning (DEW) line manager of stations between Baffin Island and Cambridge Bay, in the Arctic, during the early 1960’s. His telling experience of his Arctic Adventure was always enjoyable. He was then employed by Uniroyal, Superior Continental and Northern Telecom for a number of years. He eventually started H. H. Ims Consultant Incorporated, developing tire and urethane technology. He retired at 85.
Harry’s love and relaxation had been the construction and maintenance of the family cottage. His hardworking ethics, appreciation and love of the natural world was instilled in all his children. He had a keen interest in horses and enjoyed riding his horse Connie. He was also introduced and became a member of the Carmel Church and enjoyed many Theological discussions with many long-time friends of the Swedenborgian congregation. He travelled far and beyond and throughout the USA and Canada, with the motor home. He enjoyed family gatherings, intellectual conversations, bridge and cocktail hour with the family. He would often say, “Now that was a good Martini!” He loved his family and was truly loved. He will be missed.
At the request of the family cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date
Many thanks to all the care givers of Columbia Forest.
