Obituary for Hilda Leivo
Hilda Eliisa ( Hautagankas) Leivo, age 94, passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Vision Nursing Home, Sarnia, where she had resided for many years.
Hilda was born in Lehtimaki, Finland on September 9 1924 to Kalle and Tyyne (Rantala) Hautagankas. In 1945 she married Jussi (John) Leivo. After selling their yarn making business, they left Finland and moved their young family to Ontario in 1953 where they became farmers. Hilda worked very hard raising her family, and helping on the farm. She found comfort in reading her bible and attending a Finish bible study group. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, traveling to visit family in Finland and warming up in the winter in Florida.
Hilda is survived by her children Liisa (Andy) Boychuk, Maija (Dennis) Mackesy, Eeva (Bob) Miller and Bill (Pat) Leivo, her grandchildren Melanie Cole (Craig), Scott (Jennifer) Mackesy, Ken (Carolyn) Mackesy, Wade Mackesy, Hilary (Corey) Racher, Davin (Menaka) Leivo, and great grandchildren Tyler Mackesy, Coulter Mackesy, Elliott Mackesy, Hannah Mackesy, Miles Racher and Erik Leivo. Hilda passed before she could meet Erik’s baby sister. Also survived by her sister, Laura.
Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John (1983), and six siblings in Finland: Aune, Paavo, Toivo, Fanny, Eero and Mauno.
Friends may call at the Wyoming Chapel of Needham-Jay Funeral Home, 650 Broadway St. Wyoming, on Saturday, February 23, 2019 from 10:00-10:45a.m. to visit with the family prior to the funeral service at 11:00a.m. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery.
