HAROLD WESLEY VICKERS
It is with heartbreak and deep sadness that we say good-bye to Harold, our Father, Grandfather and Uncle, on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at the age of 91 years.
Dad leaves behind his daughter Judy (Bill) Copper, grandchildren Amy and Matthew; son Jim (Debbie) Vickers; sister-in-law Joan Wonnacott as well as several nieces and nephews. Harold was predeceased by his wife Blanche in May 2017; sister Betty; brothers Ted and Bill; sisters-in-law Gladys, Edith, May and Joan; brothers-in-law Jack, Gus, George and Frank.
On March 8, 1927 Dad was born and grew up in the west end of Winnipeg. Always a hard worker he helped his Dad as a kid in the family business. He started at The Grain Exchange when he was 16 years old and then followed his brother to Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) at the age of 19 where he spent his career. Dad met the love of his life Blanche in 1948 and they married on September 15, 1951 and were truly blessed to have enjoyed over 65 years together. Dad was an avid outdoorsman in the summer and loved to curl in the winter. An avid reader throughout his entire life, he was always eager to learn more and put this to use reengineering most things around the house. The family moved to Pierrefonds, PQ in 1970 when Dad took a move with Air Canada and upon retirement in 1987, he moved back to Winnipeg to be with the family. Dad always enjoyed a challenge and one that he was most proud of is when he and a friend raised a Seabee airplane from the bottom of a lake, rebuilt it and recertified it to fly again. He was very proud and beamed when he became a Grandpa and supported Amy and Matthew with all of their activities growing up. Dad loved to travel with Mom and was able to see Europe, the Caribbean, take a cruise to Alaska as well as travel coast to coast in both Canada and the United States. In the later years Dad looked after Mom until he himself was unable.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Tuxedo Villa for all of the care they gave to Dad at his new home and for making us a part of your family during his 19 months. Words alone cannot express our heartfelt thanks and you will all be fondly remembered in our hearts.
Dad was fiercely independent, and we take comfort knowing that he is now pain free and reunited with Mom.
A private family gathering to honour and remember Dad will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to charity of one’s choice.
