E. Doreen’s Obituary
NEW GLAGOW – Doreen Gibson Paris, 74, New Glasgow, passed away on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Gibson Woods, she was a daughter of the late Reginald and Elva Mae “Peggy” Gibson, one of 14 children. Doreen was employed with the law firm of MacKay, Parker & White, New Glasgow, followed by 19 years with the St. Francis Xavier University Extension Department. Following, she served with the Pictou County Women’s Centre (counselling women, as a workshop facilitator and activities that would empower and support women) for another 19 years. Doreen had served as a board member and Chairperson of the Tearmann Society, as board member of New Leaf, Pictou County Help Line, Family Home Child Care, Addiction Services and Pictou County Society for ual Health. Doreen was a member of the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women and in the year 2000, was the Nova Scotia Representative to the Status of Women Hearings at the United Nations, New York City.
Doreen served as the third non-clergy female Moderator of the African United Baptist Association of Nova Scotia and as President of the AUBA Women’s Institute. She was an active member of Second United Baptist Church where she served as a long-standing member of the Ladies Auxiliary and on many other committees of the Church throughout the years, most recently, the Prison Ministry Team. She was a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee Medals, and the Town of New Glasgow Human Rights Award. Doreen was a facilitator with the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children Inquiry.
Surviving are her son, Jeffery (Monica), Halifax; daughter, Gail, Whitby, Ont.; grandchildren, Bryson, Reegan, Riley and Mychael; sisters, Joyce (Theadore), Nancy, Linda (Michael), Valerie (Brian), Sharon; brothers, Reginald, Paul (Helen), Kenneth (Ursula); brother-in-law, James (Anne); sisters-in-law, Peggy, Florrie , Jane, Clara, Theresa and Donna; special friends, Francis “Babe” Paris and April Weston; many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Norman “Turk” Paris; sisters, Bonita and Annie; brothers, Brenton, Basil and Howard.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., and Ladies Auxiliary service at 7 p.m., all, Saturday, March 2nd in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, 536 Merigomish Road, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, March 3rd in First Presbyterian Church, 208 MacLean Street, New Glasgow with Rev. Dr. Moses Adekola and Rev. Ogueri Ohanaka officiating. Interment will be in Brookside Cemetery, New Glasgow, followed by a repast in Second United Baptist Church, 330 Washington Street, New Glasgow.
