Dr. Robert Frykholm Kidd, 74, of Admaston passed away peacefully Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the Renfrew Hospice after spending several days at his home with his wife, children, and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Calvary Pentecostal Church on Friday, February 22, 2019, at 11am. Visitation will be held from 2–4 and from 6–8 on Thursday at McPhail and Perkins. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Focus on the Family, Africa Inland Mission, or Hospice Renfrew.
Dr. Kidd was born June 26, 1944, in Dartmouth, England during an air raid to Rev. Donald and Malla Kidd. After a brief time in Sweden and then India, the family moved to Quebec, and he spent his youth in the Gaspé region, Trois Rivières, and Montreal. Upon graduation from high school he worked his way across the Atlantic on a freighter and spent time in Sweden as an assistant at a medical aeronautics research facility. He developed life-long friendships with his many Swedish relatives. After returning to Canada, he completed an undergraduate degree in physiology and a doctorate of medicine (1970) at McGill University.
He met his lovely wife Wendy Carson at McMaster University where she was a nurse and he a physician. They married in Ancaster, ON, and immediately moved to Victoria, BC, where he had built a house for his new bride. After a year of service as an emergency room physician, they moved to Ottawa, where he worked as an emergency room physician at the Ottawa General Hospital and later the Queensway Carleton Hospital. They purchased a farm in Admaston, where they built a house, started a family, and began 40 years of sheep farming. Dr. Kidd opened a private medical consulting practice in Renfrew in the mid-1980s. For several years he was also part of a medical practice in Chicago and he taught at an osteopathic medical school in Missouri. He was a founding member of several medical educational organizations and served terms as president of the North American, American, and Canadian Associations of Orthopaedic Medicine. He was regularly invited to speak at conferences around the globe. He authored numerous publications including a clinical textbook on neural therapy, and he served as editor of the Journal of Orthopaedic Medicine. His work as a physician and teacher touched many lives, both locally and around the world. In his leisure time he enjoyed spending time outdoors, sailing, cross-country skiing, reading, vacationing at the family cottage, volunteering with Awana at Elmwood Bible Chapel, and traveling with Wendy to Tanzania, Australia, New Zealand, China, Sweden, Ecuador, and many other places. Dr. Kidd was a man of deep faith and prayer, and one of his greatest joys was found in passing on his inheritance of Christian faith to his children and grandchildren.
Robert is survived by his wife, Wendy; by his four children, Abram (Ashby) Kidd of Mwanza, Tanzania; Joe (Susie) Kidd of Shawnee, Oklahoma; Sarah (Rodney) Kidd of Bowmanville, Ontario; David (Erika) Kidd of St. Paul, Minnesota; grandchildren, David, James, and Isaiah Kidd; Therron, Tenielle, Avelin, and Carson Kidd; Isabelle, Ross, and Paul MacDonald; and Theodore Kidd. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bertram, and two infant grandsons, John Walter Kidd and Simeon Kidd.
