It is with great sadness that
we, the family, announce the passing of Charles Hopkins on Friday,
February 1, 2019, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital,
Sydney.
Charlie was born in Sydney on October 29, 1929, to Rachel
(Gray) and Charles Hopkins.
Prior to his retirement, Charlie was the Director of
Assessment (Cape Breton County) with the Province of Nova Scotia. He
enjoyed life to the fullest. For many years, he and Audrey spent their
summers camping at Broad Cove Campground, Ingonish and later, at St.
Ann’s Campground. He was a former member of Seaview Golf and Country
Club. For many years, Dad was a member of First United Church, Sydney
and later, United Heritage Church. Charlie was a true gentleman. His
kindness, gentleness and keen sense of humour will be remembered by
all who knew him. Dad lived his life with gratitude for his family and
friends.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 67 years, Audrey
(Parsons); his children, Barry (Heather), Faye (Paul MacDougall) and
Wayne (Lynn); and grandchildren, Charles (Natalie), Ashley (Matt)
Oakley, Tyler (Brittany), Randy (Melissa), Kelsey and Samuel
MacDougall. He greatly loved and enjoyed spending time with his
grandchildren and in more recent years, his great-grandchildren,
Cohen, Tucker, Lily Oakley, Madilyn and Hudson.
Besides his parents, Charlie was predeceased by his daughter,
Roslyn Anne (in infancy); siblings, George, Effie, Hedley (Bertha),
Jessie (Howard Brooks), Walter (Flo), Marshall (Verna), Ida
Ferneyhough, Enid (Harold Gugins) and Bertha (Jim Mills);
sister-in-law, Dorothy Smith and brother-in-law, Ralph (Mary)
Parsons.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all who
have supported the family throughout this difficult time. The kindness
and compassion of Dr. Greg Myatt, as well as the staff and caregivers
at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital is greatly appreciated. Special
mention to Penny Parsons and the nurses in palliative
care.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sydney
Memorial Chapel. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel
on Sunday, February 3 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral service will be held in
the chapel on Monday, February 4 at 2 p.m., with Archdeacon Brenda
Drake officiating. Interment will take place at a later
date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer
Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.
