Obituary for Bernice Disher

Bernice Disher found her way home on February 17, 2019 in her 75th year. Her childhood in Powassan with loving parents, Carl and Hazel McDaniel, and seven cherished siblings, was her model for life with Fred. Her love of children, her teacher’s training and her tensile strength opened her home to a unique family. All children were welcomed and became hers in some way. We can’t possibly quantify her reach or count the number of people who found comfort in her home, but we cherish the stories people share of their time with her. She was a mother and grandmother to many. The 16 to 75 of them know who they are.
She loved a full house, but she also liked to empty all the furniture into a new one every now and then. She made homes in Dunnville, Wainfleet, Fisherville and Fonthill. More recently she lived in St. Catharines, Vineland and Shelburne. She loved animals. Her smile would light up a room and make it a safe place at the same time. Her baking was sublime. She could do whatever she set her mind to – finish a Vogue suit pattern in two days, dig out a pool foundation, feed an army from the fullest carts the local market had likely ever seen, play music by ear, charm the most difficult attitude, live the life she wanted, undeterred.
She may be best known for her spirited sense of fun and her dedication to helping others in any way she could, opening her home and heart as needed. Her faith in God was her constant guide. She has patiently awaited her homecoming.
We thank all of you who have helped in each transition of Bernice’s life. She couldn’t have done it without you.
In lieu of donations, please consider passing along Bernice’s spirit of caring in your community by taking time to feed someone, tip a teenager, smile at a difficult child or give a moment of your time when life seems busiest. May the radiance of Bernice’s smile continue.
Friends and family will be received at the Jack & Thompson Funeral Home, Shelburne on Thursday, February 21, 2019 from 6-9 p.m. Funeral service in the funeral home chapel on Friday, February 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Port Maitland Cemetery, Dunnville Saturday February 23, 2019 at 1 p.m.
