Floyd McDonald Tuzo
1930-2019
Floyd, born on September 13, 1930 in Bermuda, passed away on February 1 at the
Bruyère Hospital in Ottawa after a lengthy illness that he faced with grace and courage.
Floyd was the youngest son of the late Somers Wellington and Julia Adelaide Tuzo;
brother of the late Allan, Truman and Ross Tuzo, and of his sisters Elizabeth Seymour
and Ruth Tuzo Talbot; and uncle to many nieces and nephews and great nieces and
nephews.
Floyd came to Canada in 1948 to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
On graduating from the Conservatory he realized he could not make a living playing
piano so, with his knowledge of music he opened a classical music record store in
Yorkville, which proved to be too specialized. He then worked for Sam the Record Man
in the classical department.
In the sixties he went to Concordia University and got his BA in Sociology and then to
Queen’s University for his Bachelor’s in Education. He joined The Canadian Bureau of
International Education as Director of the Nigeria/Canada scholarship program and later
joined The Canadian International Development Agency, CIDA, as an education
specialist. He worked for many years in CIDA including 4 years as the CIDA education
advisor in Zimbabwe.
He was a great lover of the theatre and, as a member of ACTRA, appeared in many
theatre productions in Canada and Zimbabwe. His crowning glory was to play Morgan
Freeman’s role in “Driving Miss Daisy” for which he received many accolades.
Floyd will long be remembered for his love and knowledge of music and theatre, his
wonderful conversation, his appreciation of the culinary arts and most of all for the deep
and lasting friendship he gave to everyone he was close to.
During his illness Floyd received and appreciated the unflagging comfort, love and
support of his family and his vast number of friends.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Bruyère for the wonderful care they gave him and a
special thanks to his caregiver, Brenda Gonzales, who tended him with great love and
affection to the end.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
