Was received into our Heavenly Father’s arms at home Wednesday, January 30th 2019 in his 91st year. Beloved husband of Sharon (nee Farrell) for 58 years. Cherished father of five sons, Paul (Deirdre), David (Claudia), John (Joanne), Philip (late Karen) and Stephen (Jennifer). Joseph was the treasured Nonno of Matthew, Jonathon, Daniel, Nicholas, Zoe, Conor, Isabella, Ciara and Elaina. He is survived by brothers Riccardo (Lollie), Carlo (Anna) and his sister Angela (late Sandro Fazi) and many nieces and nephews in Italy. He was predeceased by brothers Lorenzo and Arturo.
Joseph (Giuseppe) was born in Naples, Italy in 1928. He graduated in medicine from the University of Naples and, in the 1950’s, he moved to the United States to intern in Albany, New York. He furthered his studies in medicine in Toronto at the Banting Research Foundation and subsequently attained residencies in internal medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital Toronto and the University of Saskatchewan prior to opening his practice in Welland in 1966. His skill as a tireless worker, excellent diagnostician and a relentless problem solver resulted in a thriving practice and a very long career with many appreciative patients. He retired in 2012 at the age of 84.
Joseph was a generous supporter of many worthwhile causes both local and international. He was a dedicated and magnanimous family man, a devout Catholic and a contented Nonno who enjoyed golf, tennis and skiing. He was an avid advocate for the Welland Hospital, served on numerous committees, was Chief of Medicine a number of terms and served on the Quality Assurance Committee at The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. He joined in a medical mission to the Dominican Republic and was a past member of the Welland Rotary Club (receiving the Paul Harris Fellow award), the Kiwanis Club and other charitable groups.
His family would like to thank Dr. Henk Venter for his care and friendship, Niagara’s first responders and the staff at Welland Emergency for their kindness and professionalism.
Family and friends will be received at the PEDLAR FUNERAL HOME, 1292 Pelham Street, Fonthill on Friday, February 8th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. The funeral mass for Joseph will take place at 11:00 am Saturday, February 9th at St. Alexander Church, 50 Pelham Town Square, Fonthill.
If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or Open Arms Mission Welland.
