With deep sadness we announce that Joyce Walker (nee Doyle), in her 89th year, peacefully passed away in her sleep on February 14th at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus.
She leaves Keith, her dearly beloved husband of 60 years, loving sons Peter (Lori) and David (Mary) and cherished grandchildren Alison, Curtis, Erin and Michael.
Joyce was born and grew up in Lachine, where she was proud to graduate as a Royal Victoria Hospital Registered Nurse in 1952. Her love of children led her to work for many years at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. She met Keith while he was working in Montreal and after they married in 1959 moved several times including Seattle before settling in Ottawa in 1967. They enjoyed traveling and over the years visited many places including Keith’s native Australia.
Always caring and compassionate, Joyce loved to interact with everyone she met, and was always ready to listen, offer advice and help in any way she could. For many years she was a faithful volunteer at the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Clinic and when her sons were older, she returned to nursing and was happy working with the older ladies at the Bronson Home and volunteering with the Children’s Aid Society. Joyce was also a willing Sunday School teacher and later, she enjoyed visiting the folks in her district when serving as an Elder at Riverside United Church.
We wish to thank the doctors, nurses and other staff at the Civic for all their care and attention and Rev Paul Dillman for all his support as we navigated this journey.
A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held Saturday February 23rd, 2019 at 11:00AM, Riverside United Church, 3191 Riverside Dr., Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joyce’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
