The passing of
our beautiful mother, Hilda Marion Smith, occurred on February
13th at the Dr. Everett Chalmers
Hospital. She was born on October 7, 1922 in Burwash,
England, daughter of the late James Flemming Woodall and Sarah
Woodall. Hilda was the last surviving member of her
immediate family also being predeceased by her brothers, Harry and
Jim, and sister, Eve.
She met and
married the love of her life, George Donald Smith, in Burwash where he
was stationed during the War. Dad died in 2002. Hilda was also
predeceased by her daughter, Marion, and son,
Richard.
Hilda’s ship landed at Pier 21 in Halifax
in February 1946 and we are so grateful that she didn’t join
the war brides who, after realizing what they were about to face here,
decided to get on the next boat back to
England.
Hilda was a
great storyteller, and everyone loved to hear about her life during
the war. She always remembered fondly the years she worked
at the old Gaiety Theatre in Fredericton. She loved to watch sports on
TV, especially hockey and baseball, and enjoyed talking about the
games with the
boys.
She had a keen
interest in current affairs and kept up to date even at the end of her
life; she was our best news source. She welcomed everyone
into her home, and no one left without wearing a smile. She loved
animals and adopted and cared for many strays during her lifetime. We
will miss her sharp wit and sense of humour, her wisdom, strength and
courage.
She was a
wonderful mother and we are so thankful for the love and happiness she
gave us and for the many sacrifices she made for
us.
She is deeply
missed by her daughter, Hilary, and son, Stephen (Sue); grandchildren,
Richelle, David and Joel; great granddaughter, Morgan, and great-great
grandchildren, Jakob and
Kinley.
In keeping
with Mum`s wishes, there will be no service. A burial service will
take place in the spring. For those who wish, donations in Hilda`s
memory may be made to the Chalmers Hospital Foundation or the
Fredericton S.P.C.A.
