Irene Maguire passed away peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday, February 5th, 2019 in Calgary, Alberta.
Irene was born in Trochu, Alberta, where her parents Clara and William Moran homesteaded. She was an athletic, spirited girl who loved riding horses and spending time on the farm with her five siblings. Her athletic ability was evident throughout her life as a young provincial track champion to later enjoying golfing, skiing, curling and other sports. Irene attended normal school in Calgary and her first job was in a one room school house near Brooks. She later taught in Olds and then Edmonton where she pioneered physical education programs for girls for the Catholic School Board.
Irene met Ephrim “Mickey” Maguire and they were married in 1951, making Edmonton their home. Mickey and Irene operated Maguire Electric until Mickey’s passing in 1994. Together, they created a wonderful family life for their four sons and one daughter. Irene was past president of the Catholic Women’s League and a member for over 60 years. She was a member of the parish council for St. Joseph’s Basilica working tirelessly to implement improvements. St Joseph’s Basilica parish was a central guiding focus for Mickey and Irene’s Catholic faith and family life.
Irene had an incredible enthusiasm for life. She showed determination and energy in all she did. She was a devoted mother and grandmother whose love never faltered. She taught her family to have faith and never give up. Irene’s love and zest for life continues in her family members, including her curiosity and love of travel.
Irene is survived by her sons, Kevin (Miriam), Patrick (Laura); her daughter, Kathleen (Ariel); her daughter-in-law, Jan; and her grandchildren, Keltie, Daniel, Keir, Kerry, Shanley, Kyle, Lehm, Noah and Leah; and many nephews and nieces.
Within the past year, Irene was sadly predeceased by her sons, Dr. Terry Maguire and Billy Maguire. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Mary, John, Victor, Lawrence and Eugene.
Rest in peace, Irene, and may you rejoice in the reunion with those who have gone before you.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Basilica at 2:00pm on Friday, February 15, 2019.
