Obituary of Lindon Getfield
A kind-hearted soul, Lindon Babara Getfield, went home to our Lord on February 2, 2019. Barbara leaves behind 2 daughters, Jacqui and Cecile, Caron (stepson); 2 grandsons, Mikhail and Joaquim; 3 sisters and 2 brothers; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
On June 8, 1937, Lindon Babara Phillips was born to Arnold Victor Phillips and Rubina Elfreda Burke in a tiny rural district in Portland, Jamaica called Fellowship.
Barbara, as she preferred to be called, was an elementary school teacher in Jamaica for over 40 years. Through her calling, she has influenced the lives of many generations of students. In Jamaica, she attended Shortwood Teacher’s College and completed further teacher education at MICO Teacher’s college before taking up administrative leadership roles at Dunrobin Primary School.
Barbara, the consummate educator, had an uncanny ability to engage with principals, teaching staff and ancillary staff. She was much loved by her colleagues from all walks of life. Throughout her career, Barbara touched the lives of many student-teachers and newly-trained teachers as a trusted counsellor and informal trainer. She was a friend and mentor to colleagues and she would often advocate for administrative and ancillary staff. She was a caring soul who was deeply concerned for the welfare of family, friends and colleagues, alike.
In 2008, she migrated to Canada to assist in the care of her newborn grandsons to whom she was singularly devoted. She attended the Holy Trinity (Thornhill) Anglican church.
In celebration of Barbara’s life, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, located at 140 Brooke Street, Thornhill ON L4J 1Y9. She will be buried in Jamaica on Saturday, February 23, 2019.
