After a brief hospitalization, Thérèse Maloney Cousineau passed away surrounded by love at the Élisabeth-Bruyère Palliative Centre on Friday, January 11, 2019.
Thérèse is survived by her two sons Guy and Luc. She was predeceased by her parents Thomas (Tom) Maloney (d. 1968) and Agnes Escalle (d. 1974); Thérèse was their only child. Tom married Agnes after his first wife Mary Elizabeth Burke died in 1919 when the oldest child was just 16 years old. Thérèse was predeceased by all her step-brothers and sisters; Raymond Joseph, Raymond John, Genevieve, Peter, Linus, Monica, Hilary, Bernard, Menard, Conrad, and Alice.
Thérèse will also be missed by Peter Bédard, Clair Bédard, Mary Bédard, Garnet Maloney, Casey Maloney, Geneviève Maloney, Pat Gleason, Ron Chénier, and Raef Gouiaa. At a very young age, she was deeply affected by the tragic death of two of her teenage brothers Bernard & Menard who drowned. She was inspired by the heroic efforts of another who tried to save them but who also drowned.
Thérèse was raised in a rural community near Thurso, Quebec. The family developed strong roots in the community until her father’s retirement. Through her father’s guidance, she dared to ride her horse to school and dreamed of studying law. She received a good education and started to work for Bell in 1944. Ambitious and with a sense of adventure, she took a managerial position with the company first in Mont Laurier and then in Maniwaki. Thérèse left Bell to start her married life with Remi. She returned to work to run a Centre d’information populaire (forerunner of the Quebec CLSC) in the early 1970s.
When Thérèse and Remi parted, she moved with two young children and settled in Ottawa. Drawing on her father’s work ethic, she started a business, took university courses, and soon found employment with the federal government – eventually became part of the Canadian Coast Guard. Instilled with her father’s sense of community, she became a school board trustee and received a 30-year service pin from the Ottawa Catholic School Board.
Thérèse traveled the world from Iqaluit to Tel Aviv and explored her Irish and French ancestral roots. In an isolated part of France, she found and visited the home that her maternal great-grandfather he had been born in. She kept in touch with her European French relatives for many years. After retiring from the federal public service, Thérèse continued with other careers and pursuits up until her recent hospitalization.
Thérèse was devoted to Catholic schools and Catholic causes, always persevering during setbacks; she had a welcoming smile for a stranger and took interest in hearing their story.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Racine, Robert & Gauthier Funeral Home (180 Montreal Road, Ottawa).
