Robert Joseph Melanson
1949-2019
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Robert
Joseph Melanson announce his passing on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at
the Saint John Regional Hospital with family by his side. Robert was
69 years old. Born in Blacks Harbour NB on March 4, 1949, he was a son
of the late Edward and Emeline (Mullin) Melanson.
Robert was a supportive, steadfast, loving and caring husband, father,
grandfather, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who
knew him for his sense of humor, quick wit, friendly teasing, his
kindness and his perspective on what’s most important in life. Robert
was always looking out for the best interest of others and often went
the extra mile to lend a hand.
He loved his family and spending time with them was top priority
particularly with his pride and joy, Hannah. Robert shared a very
close and special relationship with his only grandchild. He cherished
his annual apple picking trip with his girls, Brenda, Bonnie and
Hannah and his regular long telephone conversations with
Stephanie.
Robert had a long career that spanned 32 years with the Canadian Food
Inspectors. He believed in giving back to the community and in helping
others. He volunteered in several community projects such as Books for
Bikes, Buddy Benches and the Veteran’s Banners. He spent numerous
hours helping with other various community functions.
Robert started his Masonic Career at the St. George Lodge #12 in 1979
until present. Over the years he filled several different positions
within the Masonic Order. In due time he became Master of the Lodge
and was Past District Deputy Grand Master of District #5. He was very
active in both York and Scottish Rite as well as the Shrine. Robert
was a Past First Principle of St. Stephen Royal Arch Chapter #6 and
Past First Grand Principal of New Brunswick Royal Arch Masons. He was
a Past Illustrious Master of St. Croix Council #11, in Calais Maine
and Past Most Illustrious Grand Master of the State of Main, Royal and
Select Masters. He was Past President of the Main Council of Thrice
Illustrious Masters, a member of the Maine Council of the Order of the
High Priesthood. Robert was a past Preceptor of St. Stephen Preceptory
#15A of Knights Templar and Past Provincial Grand Prior of New
Brunswick Knights Templar. Robert was a Past Governor of the York Rite
College #98 of New Brunswick and was a member of the Knights York
Cross of Honor. Robert received his Royal Arch Marnier Degree of the
Eastern Jurisdiction of Canada. He was a past Patron of the Granite
Chapter #15 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Robert was a 32nd degree
Scottish Rite Masons, Valley of Saint John. He was a Past Thrice
Puissant Grand Master of the Lodge of Perfection. He was Past Most
Wide Sovereign of the Harrington Sovereign Chapter of Rose Croix,
O.E.S. Granite Chapter # 15. Robert was a member of the Royal Order of
Scotland and a member of the New Brunswick Sovereign Consistory.
Robert is a proud member of the Luxor Shrine Temple, Past President of
the Charlotte County Shrine Club and Past President of the Luxor
Shrine Temple Flag Unit. He is a member of the McLeod Moore Conclave
of the Red Cross of Constantine.
Robert is survived by his wife Brenda (Monks) Melanson of Back Bay;
daughters: Stephanie (Dana Balsor) of Duncan BC and Bonnie (Jody
MacBeth) of Kerrs Ridge; granddaughter: Hannah Hannan of Kerrs Ridge;
siblings: Paul (Brenda) of Seeleys Cove, Donald (Debbie) of Woodstock,
Mark (Laurie) of Blacks Harbour, Dianne (Alex) Savoy of Blacks
Harbour, Gail (Roy) MacLennan of St. George, Joanne (Emile) Chevarie
of Blacks Harbour, Carolyn (Edgar) Benoit of Tracadie-Sheila and
Shelly Melanson of Blacks Harbour; several nieces; nephews; cousins;
and his travel buddies: Oliver, Frisbee and Cooper. In addition to his
parents, Robert was predeceased by one brother: Earl Melanson.
Arrangements in the care of the St. George Funeral Home (755-3533) 26
Portage Street, St. George NB. A Masonic Tribute Service and an OES
Service for Robert will be held at the funeral home on Sunday
beginning at 3:00 pm. Visiting for Robert will be held at the Sea
View Full Gospel Church, Back Bay NB on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.
The service will be held from the church on Tuesday at 2:00 pm with
Rev. Randy Crozier officiating. Interment will take place in the St.
George Rural Cemetery in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in
Robert’s memory to Charlotte County Cancer or to the NB Heart &
Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family.
