Richard Hudson “Dick” Harvie
1925-2019
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the
peaceful passing of Richard Hudson “Dick” Harvie, 93, of
Sheffield Mills, on Friday, January 25, 2019, surrounded by loved ones
at home. Born in Hantsport, he was a son of the late Leland and Zella
(Hudson) Harvie. Richard joined the RCAF in 1943 and served in
Dunville, Ontario. After his release in 1944, he joined the
West Nova Scotia Regiment in 1945, training in Yarmouth and Aldershot.
Following his discharge from the military in 1946, he attended
Agricultural College in Truro, graduating in 1948 with his Farming
Degree. He started his farming career in 1950 with two work horses, a
cow and a plow. He was known for having the best corn. Richard was
also active in the Royal Canadian Legion – Habitant Branch
No. 73, Canning serving in many capacities, including President and a
member of the Color Party for many years. He had also held the
position of Returning Officer for many provincial elections. He
enjoyed playing cribbage, singing, cookies, gardening and hunting. He
married Auleen Morine in 1948 and together they travelled to many
destinations, including Cuba and Portugal. They were both avid skaters
and he enjoyed swimming at Long Beach. He is survived by his six
children, Brian (Phyllis), North Alton; Susan Harvie (Larry Blaxland –
deceased), Kentville, NS; John (Celia), Moncton, NB; Sally (Terry)
Brommit, North Alton; Joyce Porter (JP Boudreau), Kentville; Matthew
(Carolyn), Sheffield Mills; 12 grandchildren, Sarah and Christine;
Dana, Ryan, Travis and Ken; Nathan and Duncan; Heidi; Josh; Nicole and
Lucas; 10 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty MacKinlay,
Cambridge; brother-in-law, Jim (Marge – deceased) Allen, Prince Edward
Island; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife,
Auleen; a sister, Margaret Forsyth and brother, John Harvie. Cremation
has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. A
funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 31,
2019 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Maya Bevan
officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date
in the Jawbone Corner Cemetery. The family wishes to extend special
thanks to all of his caregivers and Veteran’s Affairs Canada
for their kindness, compassion and support. Family flowers only, by
request. Donations in memory may be made to the MS Society of Canada
– Atlantic Division or a charity of your choice. Funeral
arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and
Cremation Services, Kentville.
