Marion Hyland

Marion (Weir) Hyland 96 – Halifax
Marion (Weir) Hyland passed away on Jan 8,2019 at Oakwood Manor, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Born in Black River, Nova Scotia, she was one of thirteen children of Edgar Stewart and Agnes Jane (Schofield) Weir.
Born March 4, 1922 Marion was one of the few females in her community to graduate from high school. She walked many days from the Deep Hollow Road to Kings County Academy in Kentville. After graduation, she moved to Halifax where she met and married the late Edward Hyland. Together they danced their way through courtship and sixty-two years of marriage. The winners of many dance trophies, they made every family gathering special and passed their love of dancing and family parties on to their four children.
Understanding the value of education, Marion ensured that her children had the opportunity to pursue a university education and was never prouder than when each of them graduated. Marion believed in gender equality and she was filled with fierce independence and self-reliance. At a time when women did not work outside the home, she worked as a branch manager for the Halifax Herald overseeing hundreds of paperboys and the daily delivery of papers in north end Halifax.
Often called sweet and caring, and loved by all who knew her, Marion became the caregiver for family and extended family. She was at her best when she was helping others or easing their pain during illness. Family and friends valued Marion for her willingness to listen and help them make decisions.
While Marion grew up in the Baptist faith, she became a Catholic when she married. She was resolute in her faith. She never doubted that God, the Blessed Mother, St. Christopher and Saint Anthony would help her through any crisis. In her later years, she relied on Saint Anthony as she forgot more and more where she had put things. She had faith that with Saint Anthony on her side they would always show up.
As she sank further and further into dementia, Marion had to surrender her independence to the loving care of her family. She moved from her long-time home on Hennessey Place, Halifax, to her daughter Nancy’s home in Dartmouth. There she received the love and constant care that she needed from her children and caregivers the late Alma House, Lu MacDonald and Paulette Debaie Reid. Polly and Lilly as Mom called them became part of Mom’s family and we love them as she did for the love and attention they gave her.
Over the worsening stage of her dementia, Mom and the family received support and care from Dr. Emad Malak, and Dr. Chris MacKnight. We thank them for helping us through this difficult journey. Marion’s final days were spent at Oakwood Terrace, Dartmouth and her family will be forever grateful for the care she received from the dedicated staff and professionals.
Marion is survived by her children, Nancy Hyland, Dartmouth (Roger Megeney); Patricia Hyland (Michael Doyle), Fredericton; Linda Hyland, Musquodoboit; William Hyland (Darlene), Dartmouth; grandson Liam Hyland (Reagan) and great granddaughter, Nya, California; sisters Irene Davis,Ontario; Beverly Duncanson, Horton; many nephews and great nephews, nieces, great nieces, including Shirley Blackburn (George), Halifax; Marilyn McLaren (John), Halifax and great niece Heather Blackburn (Dartmouth). She was predeceased by husband, Edward Barton Hyland, sisters: Evelyn Weir, Hazel Sherman, June Knickle, Olive McNab; brothers Arthur, Lester, Lawrence, Aveman, Gordon, and Victor.
Mom’s journey in this life has ended and may she now rest in peace. We send her on the road to the next life with the words of her favourite Irish blessing.
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rain fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand
