Elliot, Marion Agnes (Coffey)
–
Marion Agnes (Coffey) Elliot, a vibrant woman with a passion
for family, nutrition and life long learning died on January 4th, 2019
at the age of 96. She was a role model for many as she was active,
engaged, always positive, and an independent thinker to the end. She
embraced change, moving with the times.
Marion was born to James and Elizabeth (Little) Coffey August
10,1922, in Harvey Station, NB where her father worked for the
CPR. She attended Mount Allison University, graduating in
1945 to begin teaching home economics. Eager for adventure, she took a
job in rural Cape Breton that involved making her own way to six
different communities. Often she would catch a ride with the mail
driver.
In 1950 Marion married G. Forbes Elliot, who she met while
teaching in St. Stephen. She nurtured a family, spending summers
together on the Belleisle, a base that continues to be a family
touchstone today. A keen follower of politics, Marion loved
nature, music, art, and books. She was an adventurer who
loved to travel, always connecting with relatives no matter where she
was.
Marion was strong in her faith, a long time member of The
United Church of St. Andrew & St. David. For 25 years she was
active in Meals on Wheels and was a founding member of the Marco Polo
Quilters’ Guild. Behind the scenes, Marion was a strong
supporter of UNB Saint John, She enjoyed attending the Canadian
Federation of University Women and Probus.
Marion will live on through her children: Malcolm (Jill),
Mary Jane (David), Bruce (Carla) and Nora (David);
grandchildren: Caitlin, Matthew and Hayley; siblings: Lorna Huestis
and Dr. Edwin Coffey (Betty) along with several nieces and
nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Marion was
predeceased by her sister, Margaret Dougan.
