Lorna Dodsworth
1932-2019
Dodsworth, Lorna Pamela (nee Rudd)
June 1st,1932 … January 25th, 2019
“Life’s a journey, not a destination” and Lorna
lived every day of her 86 years of life to its fullest.
Lorna was born on the 1st of June 1932 in Rolvenden, the County of
Kent in England. Not long after the birth of her younger brother
(John), father (William) and mother (Frances) moved to Horley, Surrey
in England. During the German Blitzkrieg of London in the 1940’s
(WW2) they moved to Bishop Auckland in northern England to safety. It
wasn’t uncommon for the family to be awakened at night by the
Bliz siren where they would scramble to the bomb shelter in their
backyard for safety. Lorna attended the Mount School in Bishop
Auckland where she obtained her Certificate of Education and from
there went on to Durham Horticultural College to pursue her love of
plants. To gain work experience Lorna traveled down to the south of
England to a town called Letchworth as the war was now over.
Letchworth’s claims that they are “The World’s first
Garden City” and where better to gain experience in the field
for Lorna. It was here that she became interested in Alpine Plants and
in 1956 left England for Canada and a job in Brampton, Ontario Canada
which in those days was known as “The Flower Town of
Canada”. She also had a dream of seeing the Rockies and alpine
plants, so she headed west on the train to work first at Emerald Lake
(CP Hotel) for the summer and headed to Kelowna to teach at an
all-boys school in the winter. Upon returning to Ontario the
following year she met up with Robert Dodsworth a Window Glazier whom
she had worked with at the greenhouses in Brampton the year prior.
Lorna and Robert fell madly in love and decided to get married and
start a family. After having two children (Cindy and Lynne) they
decided to move back to England to be with Lorna’s family who
now lived in Hamsterley and had a third child there (Janice). They
quickly realized that the life they wanted to live wouldn’t be
possible in England and headed back to Ontario Canada where they had
their fourth and last child (Glen). Lorna was very proud and content
to raise her four children in a small rural community with Robert, in
a small rural community where they lived from 1965 onward. Lorna
found great pleasure as did her husband in creating flower gardens
around their country home that was second to none. Lorna worked part
time for Canada Post delivering mail in the community she loved so
much. In the winter of 1993 Lorna and Robert decided it was time to
retire and find a place in Florida to spend their winters. They found
such a place in a small town on the gulf coast called Punta Gorda.
For 25 years Lorna loved her place on the canal where she grew
magnificent flowers for everyone to enjoy. Growing beautiful flowers
was one of several pleasures that Lorna had as she also loved to knit
and kept her loved ones warm with sweaters, slippers and socks. She
also was a long-standing member of the Women’s Institute and
enjoyed the fellowship of the wonderful members and doing good deeds
for the community that she lived in. Lorna loved spending time with
family and all her special friends. Lorna will be sadly missed by
everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. There will be a
Celebration of Life planned for the spring in her garden in the
country when the spring flowers are in full bloom.
Rest in peace Lorna.
