Julia ‘Julie’ Ruby Wilson passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta, January 10, 2019 at the age of 92 years.
Julie was born at Misericordia Community Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, October 9, 1926 to parents Robert Earl Campbell and Laura Marie Sylvester Campbell who were farming in the Paradise Valley area of Alberta. Julie was the youngest child of a family of five (older sisters Ivy, Trudy, and Pearl and older brother Bob). When she was six years old Julie’s family moved to Kamloops, British Columbia, and then to Princeton at the age of 11 and to Vancouver at the age of 14.
At 18 years of age Julie met the love of her life, Gordon Wilson, at a dance in Vancouver. The two were married at her mother’s home on March 24, 1945. After they married, Julie and Gordon took the train to the Wilson family farm near Kyle, Saskatchewan, where they lived for the next six years. In April of 1946 their daughter, Sandra, was born followed by their son, Lyle, in May of 1947.
On the farm, Julie was a busy mom and homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, and gardening. The family moved into the town of Kyle from the family farm in 1952 so Sandra could attend elementary school; they stayed there until the spring of 1961 when they purchased a farm in the nearby community of Pennant. In the winters, the family would move into Swift Current to accommodate Sandra and Lyle’s education requirements.
Always family-focused, Julie and Gordon put their children first by ensuring Sandra and Lyle put their energies toward education, music lessons, and sports while maintaining a strong connection with their church. The rink was a favorite spot to spend time during these years – Julie’s sewing abilities were put to good use making Sandra’s skating outfits, and Julie and Gordon could often be found watching Sandra skate and Lyle play hockey.
Over time, as the kids grew, Julie started working outside of the home as a bookkeeper and clerk for the Coop. She later worked for the Swift Current radio station where she wrote advertisements.
While living in the Prairie communities of Kyle and Pennant, Julie was actively involved in the church’s Ladies Aid and the Farm Women’s Club; through this involvement she made many special community friendships.
In 1970 the family rented out the Pennant farm and relocated to Calgary where Gordon studied to become a realtor and Julie worked in the Cavalier Gift Shop. They stayed in Calgary until 1973 at which time the family moved further west to Kelowna to be closer to grandchildren. Here Gordon continued to sell real estate and Julie worked for the Kelowna College as a clerk. Following retirement, Julie found a new passion in oil painting, painting many beautiful pieces over the years, all while staying actively involved with the lives of her children and grandchildren.
After 51 years of marriage, Julie was widowed in September 1996. One final move back to Calgary in November of 2001 brought Julie closer to her beloved children and grandchildren. She regularly enjoyed family gatherings, weekends away, and special family celebrations. She was much loved and respected by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Easy to get to know and love, Julie also made many friends while living at Sierras of Tuscany and Aspen Lodge where she enjoyed playing cards and visiting with other residents.
She is survived by her daughter Sandra Undseth; her son Lyle Wilson; her grandchildren Clinton (Andrea) Undseth, Michael (Charlene) Undseth, Perry (Arlene) Undseth, Rebecca (Jarid) Rollison, and Lindsay (Matt) Seewalt; her great grandchildren Leif, Christian, Torre, Colton, Claire, Lauren, Lynnae, Finn, and Lucia; her sister Pearl Felt; her sister-in-law Thelma Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Julie was predeceased by her father and mother, her husband Gordon, her sisters Ivy and Trudy, her brother Bob, her son-in-law Vernon, and her daughter-in-law Beata. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband at Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery near Kelowna.
She is lovingly described by her family as being, “funny, sharp, kind, sincere, hard-working, smart, persistent, wise, caring, feisty, honest, and beautiful”. Her impact on our lives is immeasurable, and we will miss her contagious laugh and warm hugs at our future family gatherings.
