Julia was born In Brody, Ukraine March 29th 1925. She met her husband Alexander Maslanyk in Germany during the war years and they were married in Augsburg November 1946. A year later in 1947 their son Bohdan was born. After the war, they boarded a ship called the New Hellas in Genoa Italy and came to Canada. After a short stay in Gilbert Plains, they settled in Winnipeg. A short time later Dad got a job as a chemist for Sherritt Gordon Mines in Ottawa where their second child, Maria was born. Dad was transferred to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta in 1954 where they moved into their newly built home. Julia loved her role as wife and mother. During the next 17 years Julia continued her life in Fort Saskatchewan where her daughter Helen and her son John were born.
Julia’s life changed dramatically when her husband of 24 years passed away suddenly in 1969. She wanted to be close to her Mother, Father and brothers and moved to Winnipeg so that she could have the support of her family. She worked at UVAN and then Progress/Vera Credit Union until her retirement in 1990. Her greatest joy was spending time celebrating and travelling with family.
She was a very spiritual person and strongly believed in the power of prayer. She attended St Vladimir and Olga Cathedral and was active in the Women’s League at Prosvita. She kept close ties with friends and family in Ukraine, Canada and United States.
We will miss her great sense of humour but most of all her sound advice on family matters. We love you Mama with all our hearts. Keep us close.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Dalling and the nursing staff on the 5th floor unit 3 for the respectful and kind care that our mother received.
Panahyda will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street at 8:00 p.m. Thursday January 3 and Divine Liturgy celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday January 4 at Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir and Olga, 115 McGregor Street. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of JULIA
