Joyce Adair of South Baptiste, Alberta, formerly of Peace River passed away peacefully on January 13, 2019.
Joyce was born on September 7, 1935 in Prentice, Wisconsin to Reverend C. Alvin and Elsie Johnson. She was one of nine children raised in Prentice, Wadena, Peace River, and Lavoy before the family settled on the family farm in the Nashville district east of Wetaskiwin. Joyce was a graduate of the Royal Alexandra Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. It was while she was completing her nursing studies that she met Al who was one of her patients. Joyce and Al were married on October 31, 1960 and Joyce became a loving mother to Al’s son, Rick, who was born in 1953. The family was completed with the births of Cathy in 1962 and Rob in 1967. Joyce was a nurse at Peace River Hospital for most of the next 30 years. During her nursing career, she also worked for the Peace River Health Unit, was the first matron of the Sutherland Nursing Home, was Director of Nursing, and then finally was the assistant administrator of the Peace River Hospital until her retirement in 1990. The Adair family spent many happy summer vacations over the years at Baptiste Lake and then bought a cabin there in 1983. Joyce and Al built a house there in 1993 with Joyce moving there permanently in 2003. Joyce’s greatest joy in life was time spent with her friends and family, particularly with her beloved granddaughters.
