Obituary of John Mayne
MAYNE- John Joseph Mayne (August 7, 1947 to January 25, 2019), of Port Colborne, was the beloved husband of Mickey (Marsha) Mayne for 51 years and the cherished father of Dawn Mayne and Kristine Mayne. He was an active and supportive grampy to Nyle and friend Alexa, Devlin and friend Keeshia, Phelan and friend Savanna, Brona, Flynn, Clara and friend Daniel, and Celeste. John was a proud honourary grampy to Andrew, Adam, Flora, Noah, Morgan and Tate and special godfather to Rolf Jr. John was a loved brother to Tim and Judy Mayne, Lynda Numsen, and Kevin and Maureen Mayne; brother-in-law to Murray and Madge Augustine, Margaret Augustine, Merritt Augustine and Kathy Pitkin, Melissa and Colin Field, Molly and Cesco Rimondi, Mark and Lorena Augustine and Rolf Sr. and Clara Numsen. John was a devoted son-in-law to Patricia Augustine and the much-loved uncle to each and every one of his nieces and nephews. He was devoted to and predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Rose Mayne, his father-in-law, Allan Augustine and his brother, Thomas Patrick Mayne. John grew up in Gasline and graduated from Lorraine Road School, Port Colborne High School and George Brown College. John is fondly remembered by fellow workers and lifelong friends from TRW in St. Catharines, where he worked as a pipe fitter for 37 years. John and Mickey together ran “Mayne’s” a retail Fabric, Linen and Yarn store for 19 years in Downtown Port Colborne where he was everything from the sewing machine repair guy to the customers’ favourite at the cash register. John was an active member of the Port Colborne Volunteer Fire Company for 25 years, attaining the rank of Captain and remembered as a leader and mentor. John was a member of the Sugarloaf Sailing Club, the Sugarloaf Harbour Marina Board, the Port Colborne Wainfleet Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Port Colborne BIA, and a dedicated member of the Secret Society. He always enjoyed attending the former 10:00 Coffee Break Group at Stan & Ollie’s and more recently the Morning Coffee Club at Horton’s, Breakfast Club with The Sherk and gang, Wednesday sail races in the summer season and Wednesday lunches with Senior Sailors in the off season, and of course the regular meetings at J. A. Grant and Sons. He never missed his annual fishing and hunting trips with his special fishing and hunting buddies. He volunteered for Showboat Festival Theatre, the annual Duck Race, the Food Drive, and generously served in countless ways throughout the Community. John also participated in Clinical Health Studies at the Hamilton General Hospital. After retirement, John and Mickey purchased the Mahaffey Building and successfully took on the gargantuan and painstaking task of bringing a derelict structure back to life. In 2015, John was elected to serve as Ward 1 Councilor for the City of Port Colborne. He absolutely relished his time on Council and in turn, was well respected by his constituents, City staff and fellow Councilors. John was the best Santa ever, but please do not spoil the magic by letting the kids know. John loved going on road trips, sailing his sailboat on Lake Erie, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and taking vacations with friends and family. He especially enjoyed Sunday dinners and “Favourite Part of the Week” with his family. He believed that his family, friends and neighbours enriched his life immeasurably and for that he was truly thankful. He led a life well lived and a life well loved. Please join John’s family for a Celebration of Life at the St. James and St. Brendan Anglican Guild Hall, 72 Charlotte Street, Port Colborne, on Saturday February 2, 2019 from 1:00 to 5:00; words of comfort will be spoken at 2:30. John’s family would appreciate memorial remembrances to Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation (Cardiac Unit) or the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum. Arrangements entrusted to the DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME, 135 Clarence Street, Port Colborne. Online guest register and condolences are available at www.davidsonfuneralhome.com
