OBITUARY
John Gordon Heggie
Passed away on January 3, 2019
John left us six days before his 96th birthday, just a few months short of his 70th wedding anniversary. Enjoying good health until two months ago, he died peacefully in his new home at Berwick Royal Oak.
Son of Robert and Ann Heggie, John and his older brother Claud engaged in youthful mischief around their homes at Shawnigan Lake, Langford & View Royal. He graduated from Vic High, worked for about a year with Royal Trust, then joined the RCAF in 1942. Training in Ontario and England qualified him as a Lancaster bomber pilot, but the war ended just as he was assigned to an operational squadron. He was discharged in 1945, and returned to Royal Trust, taking up accountancy. From 1946 to 1958 he worked as an accountant for Davis / Empress Motors, completing his accreditation through correspondence courses. In 1946, on daily bus rides to work, he met Patricia Smith, whom he married June 11th, 1949.
A son, Colin, was born in 1951, and a daughter, Janice, in 1954. In 1958, John became Secretary Treasurer of the Greater Victoria Water District, a fulfilling position he grew with until 1988. In his spare time, John enjoyed golf, bridge, and puttering around his homes in the Howroyd subdivision & in Metchosin. For decades, there were annual vacations to Parksville, plus numerous trips in Canada, USA and England. From 2007, till September 2018, John and Pat were very happy in their Falcon Ridge townhouse in Broadmead, walking daily throughout the neighbourhood.
John is survived by his wife Pat, son Colin (Barbara Harris), son-in-law Lorne Miller (Louise Fortier), and sister-in-law Elizabeth Woodworth; grandchildren Brant (Janice) Miller, Kirsten (Matt Parker), Ben & Kathleen Heggie; great grandchildren Miles, Gavin, Audrey & Gemma Parker, plus Westley & Hazel Miller. He was pre-deceased by his brother Claud and daughter Janice.
